to anyone that rides a dirtbike..

i am looking for a 2 stroke 250cc (or bigger) street legal dirt bike to purchase for daily transportation. i have always wanted a dirtbike and this way i can justify it with the wife. anyhow i am looking for some tips or brands or something to help me find wich bike i want. no matter wich one i get i will be putting the loudest possible pipe on it because i want people to be able to know where i am..

While I am not familiar with UT state laws, by now mosts states have out lawed 2 stroke bikes from the streets. Also a loud pipe would most likely be a no no.

I'm with Apple. There aren't anymore legal 2 strokes on the road.

If I remember right, 09 is the end of makers can make 2 strokes. That's why they've been being faded out since 04-05.

If you end up going 4 stroke, this years KTM's are the most powerfull yet. Just make sure there is a store close by, cause it can be hard to get parts.

I haven't ridden them, but alot of the people who do the super motard like the honda's. See alot of groups of guys riding those.

I think you could license a 2 stroke in Utah if you wanted too...you still can in Colorado last I checked. Depends upon the county though.

Do have any experience on a bike yet? How tall are you-- what do you weigh? You want something fast or just fuel efficient?

Yeah, some 2 strokes will just foul out the plug if you can get it to idle.

As far as price... I'm not sure anymore. I would think 6500 at the top end of the four strokes brand new. You can find some good deals on some used ones. I'd just recomend getting someone who knows a bit about them to go with you so you don't get screwed.

im 5'4 and 200lbs i am looking for something fuel efficient and also something to go play with on the weekend. nothing to fast mabey a top out at 90ish? I will not ride a bike in Utah. (most) people here suck and dont know how to drive. i will be riding it in Baton Rouge. 4 stroke is fine with me.
only minor experiences riding a dirt bike. i will definatly take a safety course.

I would try and find a WR450/426/400 that has been made street legal. KTM makes some new dual sports that are basically dirt bikes with signals and would be a great choice if you do mostly dirt. I have a 2001 wr426 and I love it. Very reliable. In 6 years I have only had to put rings in it and re shim the valves once. Runs like a champ. If you are primarily on road and will be riding it a lot then the DRZ400 as shown above is a great choice. The super moto version is good but would not make a good offroad weekend play bike unless you had spare wheels for offroad. Then however the suspension would not be great for offroad.

I bought a very slightly used Kawasaki KLR650 with 1,200 miles on the clock a little over a month ago.

Kawi's been making the KLR for 21 years, and finally overhauled (redesigned) it in '08 to address the shortcomings of previous models. Its a blast to ride on interstates and back roads. And its well planted even at 85mph, which wasn't true with my two previous Dual Sports (Honda XL200 & XL650) from many years ago.

IMHO, I wouldn't consider a 250cc. Yes they can get ~70 per gallon, but they don't weigh enough for comfortable on interstates or longer cruises.

Its a blast to ride, and it gets 55+ smiles per gallon. And in typical YT form, I've already made several tweaks to it...
