$2000 road trip vacation

My elderly parents want to go on a road trip out west & will have about $2k to go on; my dad wants to go to Montana & see the area he spent a summer as a teenager back in the late 40's alone in the mountains (an adventure to be sure) & maybe head over through Yellowstone & down to Las Vegas (no gambling - distant relations live there) & up through the Rockies.

I was wondering if anyone who lives along the route from Arkansas to Yellowstone, Vegas, & the Rockies could give me some "gotta see" places to add into their itinerary? Or even a "here's a better idea!" as in...they were even thinking of taking the scenic train ride across Canada because they've never been to Canada....no other reason *shrug*

They like the typical stuff like monuments, old battlefields, museums etc. They have a Buick CAR not a 4x4 & they don't drink or smoke or anything so no 4wheeling or whore houses please

Does anyone have anything to throw out for consideration?

I wish them a good trip and good luck. They're gonna spend half their budget in fuel alone I'm thinking. Probably more.

I know, that's what I figured but their little Buick (Century?) gets pretty good gas mileage & they don't mind eating crackers & spam. They may end up just going to Vicksburg Natl. Military park or something like that if the gas prices continue to climb. As of yet they're just toying with the idea as a 50th anniversary gift to themselves.

I'm lost & the thread was started by me; do you have any points of interest to add or were you just post whoring? I don't really mind, I'm just curious about the 1/4 of the way....1/4 of the way to what? And as I said, it's my 70+ folks that are going....not me.

The only reason for Vegas is distant relatives & old friends they haven't seen since the 60's....I'm going to try to steer them away from that & keep them more on a direct course from Arkansas into the Colorado Rockies so they can say they've seen them & up into Montana & over to Yellowstone. My dad spent an entire summer alone up in the mountains of Montana when he was eighteen & saw the Yellowstone boundary every day but never crossed over into it or Canada; just him & a mis-firing single shot .22 rifle. That was some wild country back in the late 40's!

Yeah Yosemite is absolutely beautiful but it's a little farther West than they intend to go & they've seen it already. We used to live in Cali. in fact I was born there; Yosemite & the redwoods are one of my earliest memories.

Well; I was sort of hoping for some interesting "gotta see" points of interest that locals might know of that are a little off the beaten path so to speak; you know, things that just aren't that well known but are historically significant, interesting or even bizarre (biggest ball of twine type stuff) but I guess it'll be up to them to stumble on anything like this.

My dad was the type of guy that wouldn't drive five miles out of his way to see the grand canyon when we moved from California, so I still haven't seen it even though I was right there; we saw the Arizona meteor crater because someone got car sick & my mom threw a fit....now that he's getting to the end of his life he's regretting the fact he never stopped long enough to see what was around him. Stuff like that is what I'm after, a few miles off the beaten path & see the only place where you can stand on four states at the same time or see the house where things roll uphill etc.

(I know the four corners & the weird house aren't along their route....I used them as examples)
