1 Year anniversary of SEVIS

Boy, I didn't know this was actually working! Read below; excerpts from a FoxNews story: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,129467,00.html

The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) (search) is a nationwide electronic system launched last August that houses information on foreign students and exchange visitors to the United States.

According to ICE, in the program's first year, 8,737 schools and exchange visitor programs representing more than 9,500 campuses were SEVIS-certified. As of July, more than 770,000 visa-holding students' and exchange visitors' visas had been approved to study in the United States under SEVIS. The database also has records on more than 100,000 of their dependents.
Among the reports, 36,600 potential student violators were reported for not showing up for classes, expulsion, suspension, or failure to maintain a full course load. After investigations into 1,591 of the more serious offenses, 155 were actually arrested.

>>>and of course the usual griping:

But a new $100 SEVIS fee that will be imposed on students beginning Sept. 1 may be one more obstacle to students coming to America to study, some said.
"That's something else we're anticipating and wondering how that's going to affect enrollment in the future," said Celia Bergman, director of the International Center at the Illinois Institute of Technology. "There are so many obstacles now that are put in the path of the international students."

Added Schulte: "I can imagine sort of the moaning and groaning … to me, it's just one more step that discourages someone from coming to the United States."

****
My opinion: since several of the hijackers came in on student visas and did not even show up for class, something like this was desperately needed. I recall reading about this awhile back and didn't even know it was implemented.

I think that many people in the world think that a US education is their right. I have a Chinese acquaintance (we are good friends, despite his very pro-communist beliefs) who I met in Beijing who had this almost entitled attitude that going to a US school was his right. Well over dinner last winter when he visited LA, he was moaning about this. I couldn't get him to understand that b/c of 9/11, this is the result and moreover, the US doesn't guarantee any foreigner the privilege of attending a US school.

What do you guys think? And especially, what do the Canadians on this forum think? Because I know that many foreign students go to Canada as well.

Bob

Sounds like a great idea, and something the Canadaian govt should think about. We seem to let anyone into this country and then have a hard time getting rid of the criminals. If the Canadian govt had stricter security regs then maybe I wouldn't have to go through the interogation every time I drive down to Seattle.

Like you said getting an education in the US or Canada is not a right, if they don't like it go elsewhere. As for the $100 fee, someone has to pay for the new security regs and if it's not the foreign students then that cost is split amongst all the taxpayers in the host country. And if the $100 is a one time cost it's not much compared to the total they spending on 3-4 years at school.

Me too! I love how other countries love to hate the US, but are the first ones to stick their hands out to receive our aid or take advantage of what we have to offer.

I think Pat Buchanan had the right idea of building a massive wall around the country (just kidding!).

Is it really that hard to scrounge up another $100 anyway?
