steering damper?

how can the steering damper on an 87 4runner be tested? I am new here and just purchased 87 4runner, trying to get ready for hunting season.

Disconnect one end and physically cycle it all the way in and all the way out. It should have resistand both ways and be smooth without a dead spot or binding.
