Turbo automatic transmission upgrade question

Anyone know if you can drop a turbo automatic trani into a regular auto 4runner? What mods do you need to make. Is just changing the trani computer enough or do I need a turbo wiring harness?

why are you trying to change to a turbo tranny? The turbo manual tranny is the sought after tranny. Switching to a turbo automatic would be expensive and not worth the time IMHO.

Turbo trani

It is complicated. I'm asking this for someone else. Basically he has a regular 5spd looking to convert over to an automatic because they are no longer able to drive a 5spd. I know regular auto harnesses are easier to find and am wondering if I can get a regular auto harness and use it with the turbo trani. Any info on this would be appreciated.

You can put a 5 speed ECM in an auto truck and drive it, but the check engine light stays on. One thing the ECT unit monitors is water temp, because it wont allow overdrive until coolant reaches 122 F. So you will need the ECT unit to control the shift solenoids on the tranny. It is under the radio.

If you control the tranny without an ECT unit, and manual shift, L will be 1st, 2nd will be 3rd and D will be OD. You will loose 2nd gear because there is no control of the shift solenoids.

5spd to auto

Thanks for the info. I'm looking to go from 5spd to turbo auto trani with a regular auto wiring harness. Sounds like this will work if I have the turbo ECU.
