torque converter?
I have a 85 4runner which im currently in the process of an engine swap.
While the engines out I was wondering if it would be bennificial to install a aftermarket torque converter? Or should I just stick with the stock one? Ive heard of guys increasing their low end power and gas milage is that true? I searched but didnt find much Thanks ![]()

Depends on how worn out yours is, and what sort of "Aftermarket" part you are talking about.
A performance one? or just a stock one?

I changed mine as it had 200K on it while I had it out and put in a good rebuilt, there were significant changes in the way they bonded the friction material and the oem converters were inferior in this respect.
If you can afford it change it.

$180 -200 for rebuilt from autozone and it does seem to help on power. if you get a rebuilt make sure you take your flywheel bolts when you pick it up. some of the later models had 9mm bolts = good luck finding those.

I noticed you also have 5.29's with 31's. Doesnt this give you high rpms on the highway?

I just put 33's on ( check my sig ) and that gets me close to 70 miles per hour in the 2700 rpm cruising range. My speedo is wac so I have to check it w/GPS. Not ideal but with the 22re I would rather cruise slower and still have some power. It's not my DD. Next year I may do the 3.4 swap.
