pickup tailgate on 1st gen (89') 4runner

is it possible to swap the 4runner's tailage with a gate from a standard toyota truck?

Well not without major modification they are completely different in the way they mount and work

Yes it can and its a bad a$$ modification! Jon Bundrant (all-pro offroad) did it to his personal vehicle way back in the day. A 87 4runner called "red nub"

and with enough cutting and welding I could put a tailgate off a Nissan on it. but seeing it done in the picture, cant be too much involved......about time to make a trip to the boneyard.

do the simple route: gut the Runner tailgate-remove the glass, motor etc and just cap the window opening....

On a semi-related note, are there any tailgates that will work on a second gen 4Runner?

oh the glass, window motor, etc works just fine but I no longer want the fiberglass top and plan on instead fabricating a back window and roll out teannu cover for the back. (still keeping the back seats)

speaking of, you know what else would be neat, a hilux with a topper on the back..........................and a 4runner tailgate with electronic window.

that answers my question. it fits but it don't latch without a few minutes of fab work. and your bed grows 5 inches.
