well like i said, im no expert....but my opinion on that:

-the farther the line is out, the less powerful the pull....so....maybe the idea is, that most people dont use that extra? i dont know...just trying to rationalize

Actually - the more line out, the stronger the pull. When rockcrawling, you have anchor points relatively close and are on the clock, so don't want to take the time to spool all that out to get max pull.

Aren't winches rated with max power with only a few wraps on the spool? The more line is out, the more power it has, but the slower it goes?

Edit: tc you got that while I was typing :pat:

The more line is out, the less leverage the ankor has on the drum, therefore the more power you have. Think of it as tire size, the larger diameter tire the more torque it takes to spin it as compared to a smaller tire.

BTW, I have am HS9500i I love it its a freakin beast, its probably over kill. I was going to get an m8000, but at the last second I guy on this board posted a complete hs9500i for sale with all the accesories, used once to lift a man out of a sewer, for 450 shipped!!! I couldnt pass that up.

Really, it should be. Remember, you only need enough line for the distance you need to PULL - not the distance to the anchor. You can make up that with extra cable, straps, chain, etc. The shorter spool length makes it easier to get full power out of the winch and saves a lot of weight.

Your out of luck with a winch with an integrated selenoid like the xd9000i (that's what the 'i' stands for. You need one without it to fit a TJM or ARB bumper without modification.

They are rated up to a 9500lb winch. Any winch with a seperate solenoid box should work fine.

I installed my Warn 9500 XP into the TJM T-17 this weekend and it was pure bolt in. I had to clock the clutch 2 allen holes to get the lever to line up and I also cut and re-welded my clutch lever 180* so free spool would not hit the grill when selected.

I'm not sure what all fits but the way I found out was by going to the WARN site and looking up the 4 bolt mounting measurments and comparing it to the TJM/ARB center section. Ex: the M8000 is known to fit so any winch with the same dimensions will also fit assuming it is a remote mounted control box. The only other limiting factor would be the overall length, my TJM has plenty of room for the 9500xp but I understand the ARB's are tight.

cool, that makes sense, good thinkin!

and I was wondering what to do about that engagement lever - what's the solution - reach in and up?

northfacer- you'll have to fill us in on how the tabor 9k works for ya
