OME vs. Rancho stiffness

Hello,

Next month I'm travelling to Alaska and I've contacted Erik from TrailToyz and he has quoted me for Ranchos RS9000.

Now I've OME all four corners and I want longer shocks in the rear. I'm a bit maniatic and would want to have the 4 the same brand, but I want to pick RS9000's and I think 4 shocks will be difficult and heavy to carry in the bag.

So I'm thinking about buying only the rear ones. I don't have plans to fit BJ Spacers for a while, so my fronts are good.

I wanted to know if the Rancho RS9000's in some of the 1-9 positions are equal to OME in stiffness or softness... If I go front OME and rear Rancho I want the 4 shocks the same stiff/soft...

How are RS9000's compared to OME?

Thanks,

David

Because they're adjustable I'd be willing to be that one of the positions would work nicely...you could always get all 4 and just have the fronts waitin for you when you get done.

I have Ranco 9009s on the rear of my 4Runner and I usually have them set on 3 (they only go to 5). If you are carrying a heavy load, you can increase them but the only time I set them on 5 is off road. If you drive on road with them set on 5 it feels like you have your axle bolted directly to the frame with no cushioning at all. OK for off road when you don't want a lot of bouncing when your crawling through the rocks, bad for on road pot holes and a nice soft ride.

I'm confident that you can find a setting that will be a close match to the OMEs.

The problem is that 4 shocks are quite heavy so I think I won't be able to carry them...

Thanks PAHydrohead, now I'm more decided to go Rancho.

What about the lenght? I've +4cm coils (1.6''), I want longer shocks than now I've but I think the 9009's are too long compressed and they'll bottom out...

A friend of mine has a pair of Land Cruiser 80 shocks in his 4Runner with the same coils I've and they flex very nice, I thought I can just go with 99208's, the FJ80 0'' lift ones in Rancho. What do you think?

If you're confident they'll fit then I'd say go for it, I tend to stay away from shocks made for another vehicle unless I'm sure they'd fit. you could always fully extend and compress the suspension without your rear shocks on and measure the length between the shock mounts and match that up with shocks that have the same specs. How much cheaper are shocks here rather then over there? if its that much cheaper then I'd try and find a way to get em home, maybe 2 in the luggage and 2 in the carry on.

Here a Rancho RS9000X costs 158€... This is 190$... Importers charge all they want on the products...

Warn winches here are almost double of price than there...

I have tought on the hand bag for the front ones, but those days maybe it's a little dangerous... If in any of the security controls I will have to pass (Anchorage-Seattle, Seattle-London, London-Barcelona) the policeman thinks they're dangerous I will have a problem...

I'll try to put'em in the big suitcase.

wow! That is a pretty penny for a Rancho shock I'd hate to see how much Fox, or Bilstein, or Race Runners cost there. Good Luck!
