First things first- Mods, if this is in the wrong section, please move it.

I have been planning to add a hand throttle to my rig for some time now, and I am finally going to be able to do so. I am not buying the assembly from any manufacturer, this will be a custom job. . Several months ago, I read OicnaiC's write up on how to use an old-school bicycle shifter to make a hand throttle, and the idea appealed to me. The other day, I went to REI and ordered a friction-based shifter, originally intended for the front deralliers I believe, and I will pick up the necessary cable, sleeve and swages when I go pick up the shifter. I plan on mounting the assembly on my shifter( 5-speed), and I have a few questions as far as that is concerned. Those of you that have done this mod, or a similar one, have you had any problems with slack in the cable, not enough, too much, etc? If so, do you know of any remedies for these problems? Any advice is appreciated, I will take pics when I get the stuff, and during the install.

that would work, but not really the placement I want. the only problem i can foresee is when i put it into reverse, not having enough slack, and causing the rpm's to increase. but if I have too much slack then the throttle won't work in first.... I may just have to experiment with it some.

Take a look at the Lancruiser hand throttle kits at Sleeoffroad.com I had one on my FZJ80 and it worked great. (OEM TOYOTA)

The sheath of the cable will prevent that sort of problem. Just set it up so that it does not pull too tight in any gear then adjust the slack at the throttle linkage.

I like that oem style cable, does this serve any purpose other than keeping idle up while winching etc?

Hand throttles are nice when you need to ease off the clutch and brake at the same time without rolling. Bump the idle up with the hand throttle and you wont have to rush to get on the gas.

ease off the clutch while still on the brake..when the throttle starts to drop ease off the brake and onto the gas with your foot? i do it allll the time while getting up into my driveway

Went wheeling with a guy that did this to his rubicon, worked great for winching. He also said the cruise control wouldn't engage until 25 mph, so it worked good for the small fire trails. I'm in the process of adding one myself, seeing how my 87 doesn't have cruise control at all.

As stated above, welding and winching require a higher RPM to maintain power to the battery/batteries. It also makes a crappy cruise control

That's a cool idea. I don't have any use for one, but if I had one, I know I'd use it all the time. I would be worried a little though, since then you would have twice the throttles that could stick.

It is not safe to use as cruise control. When you hit the brakes, it will not disengage (think Prius). Really for wheeling, it is nice. you can bump your idle up slightly to make those uphill (or near vertical) takeoffs easier. It is also nice when you are crawlin around in a rock garden and mainly just need off-idle rpms.

Works most excellently when crawling up bumpy rocky trails, aka redneck cruise control, but for low speeds offroad.

Your foot doesn't bounce around on the gas pedal when you hit bumps, and the truck doesn't lurch due to foot bouncing on gas pedal.

Also works for a fast idle when winching
