4wheeler or Petersen's did a winch comparison this summer. The Badlands winch didn't even work out of the box. Dunno who makes it, don't thnk it is a rebadged mile marker or anything like that.
I am a cheap guy but I would not trust this thing and I buy a lot of junk at HF..

Edit: you got me curious so came thru:

Seems like harborfreight needs to research these things called gaskets

I know of a few guys who have used the whinches from Harbor Freight and loved them or hated them. There biggest flaw use to be the grade of bolts. The ones who loved them swapped in better bolts and have used them alot. Im looking at them too. There biggest problem when tested was being submerged also. Not alot of spots here in Colorado to fully submerge a rig except if you get stupid. Mostly rocks and mountain roads here

I had an old Chicago Electric winch from Harbor Freight of the 10K pound variety and it worked great for me. used it for two years and sold it for what I had in it.... I just bought a Badlands 12K Winch a few months ago and I am pretty confident with it, even though I haven't had a chance yet to even pull it outta the box. You can't beat the price, plus from the research I've done, they have better internals than the old Chicago Electric Winches had. I just bought a Badlands 3K winch for my trailer, so I guess I'll have to put them both to the test once I get them wired up and goin.

Chicago Electric® and ROAD SHOCK® winches from Harbor Freight = YES

BADLAND WINCHES™ from Harbor Freight = NO

Check the quote below from another thread on Harbor Freight winches.

Next day used the new one to try to winch out a newer f150 2wd stock motor blew out on me. So now I'm going to take this one back and buy a name brand winch. Just thought I'd share this info.
Any questions?

Side-note: It's odd that the BADLAND WINCHES™ look like Mile Marker clones too. The newer style Mile Marker Tough Series winches are nearly identical in appearance. So either they are Mile Marker clones/rebranded too, and Mile Marker sucks now. Or it's just a coincidence that somebody bought 2 in a row that failed prematurely.

But until we know more on that...I ain't buyin' one!
