THe 97 and the 91 are totally different vehicles. Anything is do-able. the thing about it is you may as well be asking "I have a 2wd 97 4Runner and a donor 4wd S10/Nissan pickup/H2/whatever, can I swap in the 4wd stuff?"
Is it do-able? Sure
Will it be easy, cost-effective, or worth-while? That's your call (I'd say no)

I've read about 3.4 4WD stuff going into a 2nd gen, but not the other way around. Not sure if there's an adapter to make it work, one sure doesn't come to mind. If you're set on turning that 2WD 3rd gen to a 4WD, you can always use 4WD Tacoma/3rd gen 4Runner parts. It's been done before, search if you're interested.
That sorta kills the deal you'd like to make work, just saying tho.

The A340H that's behind the 3.0 will bolt directly up to the 3.4 in place of the A340F.
Unfortunately, the tranny and TCase are "unified" and the tcase has the output on the opposite side of what you need. Also, the A340H would need some work to handle the power and live; just to be safe.
Diffs are completely different. Axles and suspension are different as well. Add to that the front and rear ABS differences and you can see the issues that will arise.
Doable? Sure. Worth it? Nope.
Better solution: SAS.
Then bolt a Dana 300 or Atlas to the back of your tranny by replacing the output shaft and tailhousing from one from a Jeep Cherokee; the trannies are basically the same. From there, you should be good to go.

A friend of mine did all of this w/ a Lexus tranny (a derivitive of the A340 that the 4Runners have). Took him a weekend to bolt up his Dana300. I'm not sure if he's running a speed sensor or any sort of reluctor ring; I haven't seen the rig. Also, this is a Lexus 4.0 v8 in a Twisted Custom's buggy.
You'll have some research to do, but there is information out there.
