After installing 35's and 4.88's on my 00 tundra v8 my odometer records higher mileage than actual. i was wondering if there are any products out there that will recalibrate the speedo and effectively fix the odometer tacking on imaginary miles? for instance, i believe you can swap out the speed sensor gear in jeeps to fix the problem. or maybe an inline computer before the sensor? i found a few of these but they are mostly for domestic applications. any help would be greatly appreciated =)
I am going to throw a curve ball into this old discussion.
What if I have a mechanical speedo and place it into the transfercase in my 94 4x4. I then add the mechanical adaptor to that that I have that uses gears to calibrate, then add the $21 Marlin adaptor to that to go back to the electronic speedo.
No cutting of wires.

So I have an alternate method if your not electronically inclined or do not want to cut into your factory harness and fuss with a 'magic box'.
The reason for this setup is this, I have an adapter box (mechanical) from Tacoma Speedometer in Parkland Wa, iirc, it was $75 new. I used it on my 80 pickup to correct for 31's on a 2wd with 4.88 gears. I now have a 94 4x4 pickup with a speed sensor, the same 31's as the 80, and 4.88's. So this is what I did to fit it all up.
Went to my local All Toyota wrecking yard , 410 Auto in Buckley. Picked up a used mechanical sensor that looked about right, and it was! It must have been out of an 89 or 90 transfer case. Scott threw in the locking tab too. So now for $16 more cost for these parts, I now had something to latch my correction box to, but 1st I had to swap the installed speedo gear and shaft from the electronic sender, and swap this into the *new* mechanical housing, so as to not mess with the factory stuff inside the transfer case. These shaft/gear parts were the same length, the electronic had x2 slots for the pickup into the electronic sender, the mechanical one only had one for a speedo cable.
Bolted it up and took a drive with the GPS to verify whats happening at 60mph (actual MPH), so I can tell Tacoma Speedometer how fast the speedo is reporting. Give them $35 and Voila, Speedo reads right!
Down side is that this is mechanical, so eventually it is going to fail... eventually... 40 years or so from now maybe?!
Also it will cost $35 everytime I need to make a change, but so far I have only needed to do this once before on the other truck, going from 29" to 31" tires.
installation took all but 30 minutes from start to finish. i tapped into 4 wires behind the cluster instead of crawling under the truck.
works like a charm! couldn't be happier. thanks again!
I know this is an old thread but I need to do the same thing to my recently acquired 01 Sequoia that is running 4.88's and 285's. How well did the yellow box work for you? Any issues tapping into the wires behind the cluster?
