my buddy had his check engine light come on and took the truck to the dealer. the dealer said it was the driver side o2 sensor mounted on the exhaust manifold. They told him 520$ to replace it and that most of the time, the heat from the exhaust will melt the 02 sensor in place and they will have to replace the manifold also. they said it could cost up to 2000$ Sounds like a load of SH@@ to me. anyone else have any opinions.

i thought there where 2 sensors one before that cat and one after and o2 sensors are only like 100 dollars there not that hard to replace just get some pb blaster and soak the bolts for a few hours

yep, there are actually 4 o2 sensors on tundras. one in front and one in back of each cat. I thought the same thing, soak the bolts and swap in a new one 100$... Shady dealer, el cajon toyota.

heres a tip,certain year tundras had the warranty extended from the factory on both front o2 sensors,i believe its up to 90,000 miles,& get this,if the sensor sticks in the manifold & sometimes they do,toyota will repalce it also,cant remember the bulletin # bt can ck it tuesday when get back to work if you like

What a load of crap. It took me 15 minutes to replace the o2 sensor in my 4.7v8 in the Land Cruiser, and I have more crap in the way and less room to work.

The part is available for less than $100. OEM Toyota is mfg. by Denso and the Denso part is the same exact thing:

I changed mine Sat. 12mm socket on the back sensors and the special socket for the front. Took 15 mins on each one. Bought mine from oxygen sensors.com but Densco had them a little cheaper. If the rear sensor was on one side you should go ahead and change the other side. I paid $100.00 for each sensor on the rear and $70.00 on the front ones. I know I didn't need to change them all but with what the Toyota dealer wanted to do 1 I did 4 and still saved $200.00 dollars.

Hi,
I am replacing mine today. You can replace all four on a tundra v-8 for about 350 dollars. Alot less if you want to just replace one. They run about 75 dollars per sensor for Bosch. You can buy other brands for alot less.
You need a special socket to take them off which has a slit in it.
The locking screws to put two of the sensors on are about 2.50 per screw.
You can do all four in less than two hours and save yourself a boatload of money.

I recently changed all four of mine and the worst bit was trying to fit my fat hand into the tight recesses of the engine compartment to unhook the clips.
Once unclipped the actual replacement of the O2s is easy-peasy.

What is the downside of having a bad O2 sensor? My check engine light has been on since I bought it, PO said it was the o2 sensor, seems to run fine to me, does it affect fuel mileage?

Seems to affect mileage only slightly, I find the light more than a little irritating so I do like to rid myself of it. Also, with the light out, it will let you know when something else goes bad (although my lights been on about four times....3 were for O2 sensors, once for a loose gas cap!)

just purchased 03 tundra in november,check light came on, first thing i though about was 02 sensor.i can replace them myself but do i need a special tool and can i get sensor at parts store.

I have a 2005 Tundra that I have had to keep replacing the O2 downstream sensor on. 3 times in one year. Anybody have anything on this?

Hello Lenny, I also have an "05" Tundra with the "Bank 1, downstream O2 sensor" code warning acting up! I've replaced the sensor 2 times in the last year, and this last time 5 weeks ago, but now the light comes on and off when it feels like it! I don't notice any difference in performance but it does concern me! Do you have any knowledge regarding this issue? I do all of my work and repairs myself (don't trust the dealers anymore), I try to be a perfection freak! Any advice is truly respected! Thank you,
