Gas mileage for 80's series, How good can it get?
I'm considering getting an 80 series cruiser for a daily driver. Anyone know of available upgrades to get "decent" hwy fuel mileage 16mpg or better?

Air up the tires and clean all of the junk out of the back.
Ona long flat trip I would hit 17 mpg when holding 65 mph and drop 1 mpg for every 5 mph above that. That is only good for when I go through Kansas or Nebraska. In the mountains of CO all I get is 13 to 14.
The '91 ans '92 LC has a weaker engine. The '93 and '94 has a better engine but the same poor air measuring scheme as the 3F engine. '95 to '98 seem to be the best in my opinion.

I'm glad you are still in the considering phase of your plan. IMHO, the 80 Series LC is a poor choice for a daily driver, unless your conditions require the use of a large 4X4 vehicle.

I was considering a down the road swap for the 4Runner while spendy they will last forever. Though if I could get a FZJ to get 20+ I'd guy one of those and swap a diesel in. You can't be the room of and FZJ.

Since I bought mine I've averaged 9.2 from that day on. However it should be noted it rarely if ever gets highway miles, all VERY short trips in town or wheelin miles. (1500 miles since 9/12/08)

I daily drive mine but work from home!

I have a 96 with 305/70/16s (33s), regeared with 4.56s + bumpers, sliders. roof rack,etc. . I get 14-15 most of the time here in the mountains of CO. As an experiment, I tried driving from here to Santa Fe and back (99% two lane highway) with the cruise control at 55-60. That was about a 450 mile round trip. I got a tad above 17 going down and about 16 coming back.
