FJ40 trannies...

My buddy's FJ40 is kinda having tranny problems... Actually, it's done for. What is out there in terms of aftermarket trannies? Something stronger than stock, of course. And is it even worth it? Maybe this is a good time for him to swap in a chevy small-block/tranny... Thanks guys.

A lot of guys swap in the Chevy 4 speed gearbox. This gives you a "granny" low gear. SM420 and SM465 I believe. Does his cruiser have the 3 or 4 speed?

For extended reading, check the tech info on www.ih8mud.com Lots of info there.

Go NV4500- 5 spd, granny low and overdrive 5:1 (1st) .7 (5th)

The sm465 is good, deep 1st gear but no more legs on the freeway. 6.7:1 (1st) good, 1:1 (4th) sux on the freeway

Toyota H55 is also a 5spd, lower first 4.3 (i think 1st) .88 5th
There are lots of tranny options, SM 420 is a good 4 spd but Im not sure how parts will be to find

When installing any GM 4 or 5 spd, Advance adapters does not tell you but the FJ will need at least a 1" body lift. Also after doing that swap myself, let me tell you there is a lot of work involved. Not hard, but the instructions are a general guide and a lot of little important details get left out. If he has a 76 or later cruiser and the 4 spd, a H41 4spd has a lower 1st gear and will drop right in, I think the H55 will do the same. If he has the 3 spd then lots of stuff will need to be done, drive shafts, new mounts etc...
