Electrical Problem?

My friend was driving my 60 the other day and had a problem when reversing into a parking space. Pretty much as he describes it this is what happened:

He backed in, then went forward so he could back in again and straighten out. As he was backing in the second time the engine stalled, but apparently it was a real clean cut and at first he wasn't even sure it had. Then the steering column started smoking.

He took the keys out and left it parked. We haven't tried to start it again because obviously we don't want it to get worse. Any ideas what it might be and what it would take to fix it would be appreciated.

Thanks

So, as an update. I tried to start it and got nothing. No response from the starter or from anything really when I put my key in. I looked around and a red wire leading through the steering column past the blue piece on the wiring harness was melted. Tried to take my column apart to look at what it connects to but it had a stripped screw.

Any advice on what needs replacing, besides the wire of course.

Thanks
