Question Average MPG Early 90's Cruiser

I was on my way out of town the other day and saw what looked to be an early 90's Land Cruiser for sale at a buy here pay here lot for around 2,000. But before I go any farther, does anyone know what I should expect out of one of these mileage-wise? What type of motor comes in them? Thanks

For a 1992 Land Cruiser it's 12 city and 14 highway from the factory. The engine is a 3.9 liter V6.

Thanks, pruney81, I kind of expected it to be worse than what I get out of my '91 4runner (15-17 HWY) but I still may have a look at it anyway--Do you own one? Likes/Dislikes?

Yes it is, it's classified as a 4.0 V6 but so is the 3vze but it's actually a 2.9 liter. What is it then BAZ? No I don't own one, one of my friends does, it's very comfortable and roomy but the gas mileage isn't all that great. If the engine/tranny are in good shape and it runs well I would think 2k is a good deal. They are like big tanks.

I believe 93-97, possibly 98 were the FZJ80 Series. I assume that's what you're talking about. I don't know which model comes before those. But ours has a 4.5 inline 6, and gets low teens. Pretty consistent with a lot of todays V8s

The 93 and up models had the 4.5 and they 14/city and 16/highway but he mentioned a early nineties for 2k so I guessed at a 1992.

Your initial post was a 6 cylinder?

....J/K , I wasnt arguing whether or not it was a 6 cylinder FYI

All cruisers sold in the US were sixes until the v8 came around in the late 90's/early 2k

91-92 was the FJ80 with 4.0 3FE inline 6, expect about 11-13mpg, the 93-97 was the FZJ80 with 4.5l 1FZ-FE DOHC inline 6, expect 11-15mpg, both had the same body style and are full time 4wd. Go to www.sleeoffroad.com and look at the tech section where you will find a newbie guide for the 80 series, lots of info.

I pull like 12mpg on the freeway in the fj40 doing around 65, I get about 15mpg in town when i keep it under 45mph. Not having a Over Drive Sucks the fule fast, but nothing crawls like an F motor.

You don't buy a Cruiser for fuel economy.....

The sticker from my '93 shows 12 city and 15 highway. If I drive only city (work and back) I get a consistent 11.75 MPG and highway only I get 16.25 MPG when not towing and I typically keep right around 65 on the highway (2200 RPM).

I towed a 22 ft boat to Colorado this Summer and had the cargo area packed and running a rooftop box I got 12.45 MPG on that trip.
