Joels back ...
tranny problems , diagnosed as sencros.
Joel is planning a long Alaska trip this year , so he want his runner in "tip top " shape .. so , we ordered a marlin tranny .
Joel wanted to keep it looking nice , he's saving up for duel transfers , and also 3 link front an rear ? (not positive just yet) as well as full custom hi clearance body . Joel decided he wanted the the cast part of the case blue , so we complied with his wishes ..
we are also up dating some of the engine colors for him .. he wanted a "wrinkle" coat powder on the valve covers ..
so all torn down , cleaned , sandblasted , back together and now ready for some powder

they didn't wrinkle ? don't know why ...
also something I never had happen before !! 2 different colors , same oven , same batch ..
so I ended up blasting the bolts again and re powder coating again , but still no wrinkle
they do have a black "fleck" though , and I think look really good
I guess you'll have to decide though Joel

What probably happened was the valve covers are larger AND aluminum so they take longer to heat up thus increasing flow out time. The bolts will heat up and flow out almost instantly. This heating time differential may have flowed off the powder on the bolts by the end of the bake time. Also, I've noticed that powdercoating goes on much more even and thicker over a sandblasted surface and I think the results are much better. Sometimes if I'm having trouble getting a good coat on a part, I'll heat it up first and put a hot coat of powder on it. This usually helps solve the "polarity" issues you can have in tight corners and holes.
I like your little bolt holder thing-a-ma-jig too! I need to make me one of them

also , I was thinking the smoke could have had a reaction to the bolts ? as much as I cleaned and even sandblasted the inside , you cant get all the oil off , so there was some smoking
ohh , and the bolts were sandblasted the first time as well , so there was no contaminants.
any way , sandblasted them again .. man that powder coat is tough had to turn up the compressor to 140PSI , and re-coat , bake , and done

That makes sense too. I've powdercoated some "smoking" parts too and haven't had a problem, but that was typically with black powder so I'm sure it masked any discolorations. It's crazy how the stuff works - both chemically and mechanically. It's amazing how tough the stuff is - My Eastwood kit is by far, one of the best investments I have made! My motto has been "if it can fit in the oven, it gets powdercoated." I just wish my oven was big enough to fit my whole truck!

well Joel is back
apparently , this engine liked the H2o .. or maybe not !
Joel brought it in with a visible crack on the block , as well as oil and coolant loss
engine out .. time to tear it down so .. started the tear down (NEW, used engine in the background )
yep .. as expected .. DAMAGE
2 rods broken .. good job Joel !

also just a mention on the "NEW" Marlin transmission now that he has some KM's on it .
Joel is NOT happy with it .. it is worse then the core he sent in . unfortunately , shipping is to much money for them to "fix" the problem as Joel has to pay . he's really disappointed !
