4Runner build Specialists in New York
All,
I'm new here but not to Toy trucks. Currently driving a '99 4Runner 6cyl Limited w/165K as a daily driver. I do lots of driving for work (40+K) so my question is directed with that as my primary use. 99% of my driving is highway in NY / New England so my truck goes over lots of potholes, through lots of deep snow and heavy rush-hour traffic.
I recently had a 'lil accident and had to replace the front bumper. I went with a sweet plate unit from OutdoorLogic in CA. While I had the truck on a lift, I decided to replace shocks (OEM) all around.
I had my local shop install the shocks and now, I have a clanking noise (sounds like thin metal - like a brake shield) in the front (strut area I think) whenever I go over even minor bumps. The shop can't seem to find the cause of the noise. If any of you'll have clues for me on this I would appreciate.
I am disappointed with the ride I'm getting out of these new shocks. Seems that even minor compression joints send a loud THUD and jolt rebrevating through the entire truck. The back seems (for lack of better terms)...weak. Bumps and potholes seem to cause excessive up and down swinging. I'm guessing it's time to put new springs on?
I am looking for comfort and control on the road. I've read lots of posts on different spring/shock combo's. I do not want to lift the truck if I don't have to or if it will depreciate road performance. I welcome and suggestions especially on finding an experienced shop (NY, NJ, New England) that specializes in building/working on 4Runner suspensions.
Thanks!!

sounds like you need springs too. i'm having the same problem with my LX450 i just bought. the whole truck shudders when i hit a bump. i am going to stick either a TJM 3 inch lift or an OME stock height springs and shocks with foam filled shocks if i can find someone to do it.
its seems to be a pain in the butt to get anything done for a 4x4 in brooklyn suspension wise, no one wants to do it.
did your suspension raise when you did the shocks?

I was having similar problems with my 2000. I replaced all my shocks with Bilstein HD shocks and the rear still felt the same. I installed a set of Coil-Rite airbags and they have helped tremendously. I wanted new some aftermarket coils, but I did not want a lift. The airbags seemed to be the best solution for me.
