The Darkness. 98 4runner build up

I guess it's time to start a build thread on my 98 4runner. I bought this a couple of months ago and just started cleaning it up and fixing a few things.

It was in decent shape. The lady I bought it from hit a small deer in the front right ,so the door ,fender, bumper and quarter panel were dented in various degrees. I started the bodywork and painted it black.

I cleaned the interior and installed new carpet and peeled all the dumb wood trim stuff off the dash and all the other panels it was stuck on. Sorry ,no pics on the interior. It turned out great looks new. I am in the process of replacing the brakes complete front and rear .

I have a friend that is doing a crazy long travel front end on his tacoma so I am getting his old stuff

I am going to make this a dune truck and a fun DD . The winters here made all the parts so far come off really hard. It took all of today to do the UCA 's and ball joints . The coilovers were a pain too . They were a direct bolt in on his 2001 tacoma but to had to trim the upper pocket to clear the hose for the reservior. We removed the sway bar too all the bushings were bad and he hasn't been running it for a few years on his truck so I don't think it's needed . We were going to tackle the brakes too but ran out of time .

I seem to get a lot of his scraps! I still need to figure out the rear . I don't know what shocks I'm going to use yet. When it's all done it should do pretty good on the dunes!

The salt is cringe-worthy.

Nice shiny black look and it's always nice to have a friend with a garage and one or the same with a few hand-me-downs to lob at you.

Thanks! The picture does look really rusty. In person it's very clean under and body wise . I am surprised at how rust free it is . I think I'm the only person that undercoating worked on . The Fox 2.5 fronts did take a nice salt bath from my friend . He only drove a few times in the winter. Yea salt! I am just too lazy to take them off and polish them. I will only drive this from April to October ,I have a chevy truck that I plow with in the winter so no more winters for this!

I took the truck out to Silver Lake Sand Dunes this weekend for a shakedown run. It performed great! I was able to take small to medium whoops very fast ,like 50+ mph. The only issue I had was the rear is packing under larger whoops and it is prone to bouncing more than I liked. If I have no rear passengers it was quite a bit better. I made test hill every time and most of the time I was flying in 2wd. I am going to address the slight rubbing in the front with a BFH and I think I will install some limit straps and Fox airbumps next. Overall I was really pleased . I had a guy with a newer Tundra try to chase me for a bit then I couldn't find him. Awhile later he found me parked on a dune and was shure I had some crazy engine . I informed him it was all stock except the suspension . He said I was walking him by twice his speed or more and he could barely see me after a few minutes! Suspension >power
