your thoughts on a new ride (4r)
ive been looking and looking for a used 4r for a while now. time to upgrade from my 91 yota pickup.
i found a use 02 limited 4r 4wd with 81k miles. does 81k miles sound like a lot? i dont think so but i guess i just need to hear it from someone else.
it has:
abs (4-wheel)
air conditioning
alloy wheels
am/fm stereo
cassette
cruise control
dual front air bags
dual power seats
leather
moon roof
multi compact disc
its certified and they are asking $18,993
what do you guys think?
anything to look out for when buying an '02 4r? im used to older trucks.
thanks!

hey josh, nice choice!
i've got 100k on my 02, still running just great.
the only significant issue i can think of for 02s is that the weather seal trim around the the inside of the doors. nothing a little adhesive can't take care of. oh..also, and a bunch of 02s fell under the recall for the front suspension lower ball joints.
other than that, they're pretty solid. i like the multi-mode that the 01/02s have, makes AWD and 4WD real easy. if you're gonna wheel it, there's a way around the traction control and VSC if you really need it.

I'd say find a 99 or 00 4Runner with the rear diff lock....especially if you plan on wheelin it. I got my 99 Limited 4x4 with 120k miles for $10K, so you should be able to find one for cheaper than the $19k they are asking.

hey wassup charles! how r u doing? long time no talk!
man, has your 4r come a long way! i remember wheeling with you up at gorman! i still have the pics and videos i check your site from time to time and noticed its down.
thanks for the info. yeh i dont really wheel much anymore. would like to get back into it a little. nothing hardcore or nething but just some exploring and stuff. i will lift it a few inches. i want to run atleast 32s or 33s.
im guessing the 02s dont have electronic diff lock?
i just need a new daily driver and a rig that can take me offroad to my shooting areas.
i think i will be able to get it under the $19k though. my friend can hook me up bc his bud works at toyota corporate. ill see what kind of deal he can get me on certified preowned 4Rs.
thanks!!!

yeah, 02s have the center diff lock, which is only good for going from AWD->4WD.
i'm perfectly happy with my 02, but i guess if i had to do it all over again, i'd consider a 99 with rear e-locker.
for what you plan on using it for, the 02 will be fine. if you ever want to hit up some trails for wheelin's sake, let me know josh. plenty of ares from "mild to wild" around here.

Look some more since you can find 'em with that many miles a few thousand cheaper.
If you plan on wheelin' than I echo the sentiments of the others and look for any locked 3rd gen but the '99-'00s have the upgraded goodies and no damn hanging cup holders.

I think it sounds like a real nice truck. I just got my 02 Sport w/ 54k in April and I paid a bit over 20k, it was certified and that included $800 to get the platinum 100k bumper to bumper warranty. Price for these trucks is relative to demand where you live, good luck finding a certified 02 4wd Limited in MA for less than $18K. So if the price is fair where you live then go for it. The overall truck is a great vehicle and the 3.4 will easily go past 200k, I used to be skeptical of any auto lasting that long but I know a guy w/ a heavily wheeled 95 Tacoma w/ 220k on the stock tranny, another guy has about 180k, so these autos really seem to last if treated right.
