Your Opinion of the 4 cyl. engine

I am just wondering what everyone thinks of the 22re 4 cyl. engines?? If you like them - why? And if not - why?

in my opinion, the 20R, 22R and 22R-E engines are some of the most reliable engines ever made. not the fastest motor for a 4x4, but they run forever and are easy and cheap to work on.

i have a 22re in my runner, it has over 250k miles (or somewhere around there) and it drives fine, i acctually enjoy driving it, its not to slow.

There's a celica out there with a 22r and it has 500,000 miles on it on the original motor. It runs great and burns very little oil. All you have to do is change the oil and do the required maintenance and the 22r should outlive you! The celica belonged to my stepdad at on time and now belongs to a friend of his.

I love my 22r in my pickup. As long as its taken care of, the 20r, 22r and re are almost bulletproof.

Great engines if you don't need/want the power. Their are built tough as nails, but the V-6's aren't far behind, especially the 5-VZE <-great engine.

I opted out for the 4 cyl. because it just didn't have the power I wanted, granted it gets much better gas mileage and what not, but the V-6 makes it that much easier to drive over passes and up in the mountains as I do.

It always tickles me when we talk about the 2.7 and people always make a comment about it's lack of power. It does not lack power at all when it's driven the way it's ment to be driven.
I live right in the middle of the south central mountains of WV and I go from 800' to 2200' three times before I get to town from my house and I drive in these conditions all day and have no problems at all with my 2.7 auto.
It's not as fast on the take off as a 6 banger but it will cruise all day on the expressway at 75 -80 miles per hour.
Off road in 4 wheel it will go just about anywhere you want to go. For the really steep stuff place it in 4 low and low range and it will climb a rock wall if you let it.
A friend of mine pulled a large U-Hall from San Diago to PA with a 2.7. It wasn't fast over the mountains and hills but it made it . That was 4 years ago and he is still driving the same Tacoma 2.7 with the same engine and same auto tranny.
As stated they are not as fast as the 6 but it will do the job just fine if you know how to drive it for the conditions your in. Mike

i personally didnt care for the power on a test drive. Some people dont care about the power and thats fine, but I do. I tow stuff on occasion too so I want a little bit more capacity. I feel my 3.4 is under powered sometimes. If you dont need or want the extra power then its a good solid motor.

i think the only thing the 2.7 is lacking behind the 22R is the fact that it's only been around 10 years. the first 22R engines came out in 1981, and the R engine family existed from the mid 50s until 1995('97 in a few other places). that's a longer production run than the small block chevy.

so far, the 2.7 has proven to be a great engine, and has as much power as the 3.0.

i hadnt had a single prb with my 2.7 120000 on it, with the whole exhaust/header/intake, it gets wayy better gas mileage than the 3.4, plus all the 400lbs of armor on my truck, without gears, it runs better than i expected, sounds really nice with the super 40 flowmaster, no rice sound at all

The 22R in my runner is a good engine, but it is by no means fast, even with the mods i have on it. I test drove a 2.7 Tacoma once and by no means did i think it was lacking in power. For a single cab truck it seemed pretty zippy.

I like them for a few reasons:

1. Reliable and long lasting

2. great gas mileage

Bad things are:

1. Lack of acceleration for on road driving.

Overall great motor. will last forever.

The 22re in my rig just won't quit.
With my 5.29 gears I get pretty good acceleration, although mileage suffers a tiny bit - not much though. I've changed the timing chain, that's about it.

The 22r 22re are great motors they will last almost forever. Probably because they have no power to ruin them along with most toyota stuff

I love mine and have overcome the lack of power issue with a bit of modification.This is my third truck with this motor,the first going over 350k miles and the second over 500k.
You just cant go wrong!

I just got back from a road trip from Seattle down the coast to Cannon Beach and then back up, detouring up to Mount St. Helens... Granted I have stock tires on it, but it cruised great at 75 the entire time. The only "trouble" I had was climbing up the mountian... I had to be in the truck lane and slow down to 55 or 60 - but I still made it there and back with NO problems!!!

I bought my 4runner with the 4banger vs. the v6 mainly for fule ecomomy but I also bought it because it is more relyable than the 3.0. They are both great engines but the v6 only offres a bit more hp with a substantial loss of fule economy. After a few perfomance upgrades I have close to the same hp with MUCH better gas milage.

I love my 4 cyl. It's great for gas mileage, and really doesn't lack power. When I first got my truck I had in my mind that it was slow and sluggish and it really bugged me. Then I drove a friends 99 with a 3.0 and mine was just as quick if not a little more. I didn't get a truck for the speed, so I couldn't be happier with the 4 cyl.

I am very happy with my 4-banger. Gotta love it for reliability, ease of repair/maintence, decent fuel economy, and "the little engine that could" feeling.

i'll add a little more love for the 22RE...

extremely reliable, easy to work on, parts are relatively cheap (not that you need many)...

it's not a drag racing engine by any means, but, as long as you rev it (which it has no problem with) i find it to be powerful enough. just gotta be willing to downshift...

only soft spot is the plastic timing chain guides...but $60 (for steal backed guide kit from EB) and half a day or so of wrenchin' will take care of that.

I've had my truck up to 95 miles per hour with its 22RE engine for a short time. I didn't even realize I was going that fast until I looked at my GPS later.

The 2.7 is the way to go. There is no lack of power as some seem to think. In fact it will lay away some of the older v6 engines. Mike
