Wow! Thats depressing. 4runners not selling?

Had my 4runner on Ebay this past week. Highest bid was $4,954. Am I dillusional or is it worth less than what I think it is?

I set the buy it now at $9,500 and the reserve at $8,900 is that too much? I have over $7000 in upgrades over the past year (not including routine maintenance like timing belt, water pump thermostat, belts and hoses,Power slot rotors and ceramic pads, new radiator and new steering rack) all of that was over $2000.

Here was my ad on Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...SU:MOTORS:1123

It had a little over 1,080 views and 30 watching with 6 bidders.

There is no doubt that you have a very nice 4Runner.

But, one must understand two things...

1.) No one has ever reaped the financial benefit of modding and then selling off their vehicle. From a buyer's standpoint, purchasing a pre-built rig is a great investment. Even with lift, tires, wheels, yadda yadda, a seller cannot realistically expect to break even.

2.) Let's break down a Toyota 4Runner. To the everage person, it is simply a 5 passenger, mid-size SUV. For the purpose of people-hauling, a minivan is smarter. For towing, a full size would be a better option, and for general transportation, that Honda Civic is a no-brainer. Let's face it, 4Runner's are bulky, thirsty, and seemingly overpriced compared to most of it's competition.

Don't misunderstand me, I think that 4Runner's are wonderful vehicles and serve their purpose well for people like us, but not everyone is like us.

Hope I didn't break your spirits here, just trying to shed some light on your situation. Good luck with your sale, and don't break down and settle for a price that you are not satisfied with.

It is nice. I almost stopped the auction a couple of times after walking out to the garage and seeing her sitting there but I need to get something that gets around 30 mpg and the only way this would happen in my 4runner was if I could drive to work and coast all the way home. It does good for what it is (18 mpg) but just not good enough.

Oh I wasn't even looking to break even. I was looking to get half of what I have in it! $16,500 is what I have in it over the past two years. I thought half would be pretty fair. It doesn't really break my spirits as much as it may hurt others with even more or less done to there rigs. It should bother most everyone who owns a truck even remotely like this one because basically for most of us there truck is worth half or less than what they paid for it.

nix speaks wisdom. eBay Motors allows a free re-listing if it doesn't sell the first time, but I'm not sure if it must be an immediate re-list or you can wait awhile. If you can wait, let gas prices continue falling until below $4 and re-list then. Honestly, I've had better luck selling on Craigslist than eBay Motors, though.

Gorgeous 'Runner. Good luck.

I think you have 90 days to relist on Ebay. I did try craigslist for about a month but nothing really arose from it. I guess the good thing is that gas is going down so maybe it will help, It is down to $3.75 around my house so that is getting better.
Thanks for the advice!

I checked Ebay completed listings and a stock 97 with comparible milage and autos are going for around $4000 dollars. The dealership said they would give me $5,000 in stock form as a trade in so I guess It is about even across the board. Maybe I can dismantle her back to stock then sale all the aftermarket stuff for half of what I got into them. I could probably make more that way.

I'd say take it back towards stock and shoot for 6-7k. Sold my 97 in may for 5800 but it wasn't as nice as yours by a long shot. That is one of the cleanest 3rd gens I've seen in a while.

If I were in your shoes I'd keep it, and get a mid to late 90's civic/corolla or something similar.

So does everyone else... That's why your rig isn't in high demand right now. You are selling for the same reason no one is buying.

a bone stock mint one would fetch the big bux

your modded one has one purpose. to go on trail.

the majority of ebayers won't

you should put an ad in 4wheelr or some 4x4 specific web sites
but your should really hang on to it and get a second vehicle

keep the 4runner

good point. It is still disapointing to mod it, take care of it more than most would and still be only worth a third of what you have into it.

That's what mine gets and mine is no where as nice as yours.

I'd just keep it and get for the weekends/camping trips and get a second car like a civic or corolla to drive back and forth to work in. You'll just end up kicking yourself later.

If your going to sell your rig for something more economical, you are going to buy a used car I hope. If not, it might not be worth it....Just wanted to make sure you have ran the numbers on the price of fuel vs. a possibly more expensive vehicle, know what I mean? just trying to watch out for ya, you have a sweet rig and I wouldn't want you to regret selling it

Again, your truck looks awesome and I'm sure you put a lot of work into it but SUV prices are plummeting. Heck, I just bought a seriously modded 2000 4Runner for $3500. $3500! That is insane! And I feel totally lucky to have bought it at that price. Just pull it off the market and wait it out. You are going to lose on all that work and cash for what? 12 MPGs? Not worth it.
