Wont Idle at all ????
I just rebuilt my 1984 22r carborated and I cant get it to idle at all. I got the timing a sclose as I could with it not being able to idle. Then i checked all of my vaccum lines and found one of them plugged solid and cleaned it out. After this it ran better but still wont idle. I can manually keep it running but has to be over 1000 rpms. under that and it just dies. But if i go over 2000 it jumps up to 3500 all by itself and slowly comes back down. But if I leg go of the gas sometimes it stays at 3000 for a while and then drops off and dies and others it just drops imediatly and dies. I don't know what the problem is I am thinking that it is either my carb or maybe another vaccum line. Can any of you help me out?

Can of worms. When it does run, how does it run? Does it run rough and does it misfire at all? Did you remove the distributor? Has the engine not run in a long time? That is, has it been sitting for years and years? Hows your oil pressure? How many kv do you have coming out of your coil? Plugs, cap, rotor, wires all in good shape? What is your vacuum reading? do you hear any leaks? Hoses routed correctly? Need more information.

alright well it runs fine over 1500 rpms but under that it is really rough. I started to rebuild it last summer so it hasn't been siting very long. I got the head and block machined 2 weeks ago and it is bored 40 over. The engine is entirely new except for the crank, block, connecting rods, cam and lifters. It missfired a couple of times but i think i fixed that with timing it better. My oil pressure if perfect right were it needs to be. My plugs are brand new bosch +4s brand new wires cap and rotor. I am pretty sure the hoses are routed right. I took 2 hours to get them where they are. But i have no idea what is with the rpm spiking that is just weird i have never seen that before. I will be holding it at 1200 or 1500 rps and then it just takes of to 3500 or 3000 rpm all by itself and then starts to come down slowly. what else do u need to know besides this?

another question what is my timing supposed to be around 1200 to 1500 rpms? the book tells me it needs to be at 5 deg BTDC at 950 rpms but i cant get it to run below 1000 so how do i figure out what it is over that? I have it set on abou 10 deg BTDC right now. can anyone answer this?

I think I may have fixed my own problem. I finaly got fed up w/ the whole thing i took every piece of vaccum hose, rail, and accessory off of the truck including the carb and ran sea foam through them each individualy and found out that i had a clogged rail that goes to my distributor, a clogged three way router, and a hole in one of the hoses to my carb. So i am going to let them all dry and see if that was all my problem was. Thanks for trying to help me out. i will post back weather or not that was it when i know.

Sounds like you are on the right track. Take care of the simple stuff first. You did all that machine work and didn't go with a new cam????? Yes, check valve adjustment too, could be the root of your problems. Let us know how it goes.

Well my truck is all better now. I just put the vaccum lines back on after thouroghly cleaning them and cranked it over and it purrs like a kitten. no misses, backfires, hesitation or any other noises. Sounds brand new. YES!!!! All better. Thanks for tryin to help me out wrench. Oh and by the way yeah i know not puttin a cam in was a little wierd but it wasn't that old it was replaced before the timing chain ate through the cover into the water jacket. My dad let the guides break and the timing got so far off it bent one of the valves and he let it go so long like that that the chain wore into the main water housing. That is what started the whole rebuild. SO 9 mos and 2000 dollars l8er it is runing like brand new and whats more it is mine now and not my dads. This truck has been in my family since 1984. My grandpa bout it brand new off the lot and then he sold it to my dad in 2000 when he bought his tundra and now it is mine. So ne ways history is over. It is running. Thanks all.
