Looking at getting some winter tires for my 03 Runner. Comments on Toyo Observe GP-4, Michelin 4x4 Alpins and Bridgestone Blizzak DM-Z3 in size P265/70-R16. I am getting steel rims from Toyota to fit them on. Toyota does not have the 17" rims yet to put the OEM size P265/65-R17 on. Here in southern Ontario Canada we can get a fair amount of snow at times but lots of slush and ice!

I sold the Blizzak's when I worked for Firestone. They are really good tires and very sticky. But, if you are going with snow tires, why don't you get a cheaper tire and put studs in them? Studded tires will work better.

I can remember when studded tires were allowed in my province but it was 35 years ago and they have been banned. They did work fantastic though.

Are the wheels from Toyota the OEM steel wheels? If so, and you are not committed already, you might want to check out this site;

I got a set of OEM '03 16" steel wheels from them for $60. each, shipping included. My dealer quoted $160. each. The also have the center covers for $60. a set. They shipped the day I ordered, and I got them the next day ( Ohio to NY ). They are new vehicle take-offs, and mine were in like new shape with only one small mar on one. I put a set of 275/70 Bridgestone REVOs on them and they look great. Also, remember, if the dealer didn't mention it, you need different lug nuts for the steel wheels.

The rims are from my Toyota dealer, on sale for $80(Can $), from the normal $120(Can $). I will make inquiries about the lug nuts, thanks for that info, hoping they are included!!!!!!
Ok one vote for the Bridgestones.

I am the biggest Revo fan out here but I would not pick Revo's for snow use.

I used Revo's year round on my 99 and was very impressed, however, if you are gonna have a dedicated snow tire/rim set up, stick with the Blizzaks.

I work the winters at a ski resort and I can say that the Revo's were very good but a pal of mine with snow tires on a 2WD truck, could pretty much go where I went.

In short, I think the Revo is the best compromise genuine AT out there but they will not compare to a genuine snow tire for regular snow use.

I had a set of Bridgestone Snow tires that came with the M3 I used to drive. One of the most awful cars ever in the snow, but the tires really made a difference. The tires were great. I have a winter ski house in VT so I spend a lot of time in the snow. My last truck (Chevy Tahoe) had a set of Toyo Open Country AT's. Excellent in the snow. They blew away the Michelin MTX's I had on there previously and my buddy's BFG All Terrain TA's on his Suburban in the snow perfomance catagory. But, the Toyo's did ride stiff compared the the Michelins.

Thanks for the info so far. Has anyone had the Toyo Observe GP-4 on a vehicle and how was it?
Can anyone tell me how the OEM Dunlop Grandtreks are in the winter? They are wearing fast approx 1/4 gone after only 13,000 kilometers!!!!!!
I am concerned that they are not worth a damn on the ice slush and snow and quite prepared to go to straight winter tires on rims if needed.
Keep your opinions coming.
I have to admit it would be much cheaper to let the Dunlops wear down and then put some good all season tires like Michelin or Bridgestone on it then.

Too bad you got the GrandTreks. I was fortunate enough to get the Michelin Cross-Terrains on our '03, and they're great. They give very decent performance in snow and ice, are quiet, handle crisply and still have ~10/32 of tread remaining at 20K miles.

I wouldn't consider spending the extra money and suffering the inconvenience of dedicated snow tires here in Lansing, MI. Can our weather be that much different than yours?
