Hey guys...just wondering...when I bought my '02 Tacoma and went for my first fill-up, the salesman told me, "Whatever grade of gas you first use, stick with it for the life of the truck." I've since sold the Tacoma and have an '02 4Runner and have been using unleaded plus gas. But with the prices as high as they are in Hawaii, I'm thinking of switching to regular. Is what the salesperson said true? Should I not switch? Does it make a difference? One way to find out is to go with it and see if the engine knocks, but I'd rather not subject it to that kind of punishment. My 4Runner is stock with no mods to the engine.

I have no great explaination or expert advise on this matter. All I know is that I've never bought anything except the cheapest gas I can find for all of my vehicles, never once had a problem that was traced back to bad gas. I don't see why you would have a problem.

ha...back when i had my heavily tuned subaru wrx sti i would use the cheapest premium gas i could find.

i have never had any problems traced back to bunk gas either.

Unleaded plus is a joke. You only need regular. On this subject- I'm tired of buying premium.

In my toyotas...nothin but the cheapest. Usually Costco gas if I want to fight the line for it.

My BMW drinks nothing but premium chevron though

No point in premium for a stock rig if you ask me. I run 85 or 87 in mine, the gas mileage is fine and it doesn't knock, my mustang had high compression pistons (12.4:1) in it, and cams, it took premium and octane booster or a few gallons of 100 unleaded mix.

Gas companies attatch seductive words like V-power and Premium to higher octane gas. The gas is no better quality than regular octane (87). Unless you have boost or high compression, you don't need high octane.

I wondered about this too. I used to run 89 in my '96 ... but when 89 was 3.29 and 87 could still be found for 2.07, I started going with 87 and didn't notice much of a difference.
