Who runs the dunes in their 4runner?
Hello all,
For my bachelor party my buddies and I are going to the dunes to have a last weekend of drunken good times before the wedding
I'm wondering, how do our 4runners do in the sand?
My 4runner is a 99 with 6 cyl., auto, e-locker, and 265-75-16's. I'm gonna install the tundra coils, andy's spacers, and tacoma tokico shocks on the front and FZJ 80 coils and shocks on the rear before the trip.
My last dunes rides were a 99 F350 with 35's and V10 and a 91 jeep Comanche with 42" swampers, twin stick case, D60 and 14B axles, and lockers front and rear.
Just curious how the 4R's do.
Thanks, Judd

they can do fine.
just air down and you're pretty much set. you don't have a v10 anymore, but just remember to keep the right momentum. with your setup, you'll have to really try to get stuck.

My first run out there was on a drag strip stretch. People had said it was smooth, but I didn't pay enough attention to the people that were running before me, I was just all right foot and went for it (which is the story of my off-road life).
O. M. G. WOW that sucked. The last I saw of the spedo was around 60mph and that was just the beginning of things to come. I never got in sync with the whoops and ended up bouncing all over the place. A lot of stuff in back came up to say hi to us in front.
The one pic of me airborne (which is also my avatar if you have them turned on) was the _LESSER_ of the jumps I made that day. When I first got to the top of that hill, I spotted the path to the dropoff, almost cut someone off (Sorry Max!), and just floored it.
The S/C ran up, people knew who it was and kinda' just ... ducked. No one had a camera running. They say it was possibly the largest/longest leap they had ever seen a 4Runner do.
What goes up, must come down and when I did, I hit _HARD_. VERY VERY HARD.
My right seat will read this later and hopefully tell you her side, but dude... I _TRASHED_ her back. 10 minutes later we had her out laying in the sand and someone was digging for a T3 (Tylenol with codeine). She couldn't move for a while - and the next day was awful for her.
The truck somewhat survived, but Shannon's back took 4-5 weeks to get anywhere near normal.
The aftermath would show that she tensed up really bad as we launched (she loves my driving!) and when we hit, there was simply no give in her body.
I'm babbling, but the end result is that we had a lot of fun. Yeah, we got stuck a couple of times, and I broke some stuff ('cause I was being stoopid), but the truck did really well. I think I was aired down to about 12psi. The S/C really _didn't_ help 'cept for the huge launches, though it was fun to go blasting up some of the hills with it screaming and watch people run.

True, true, it's all true...everything that midiwall said! And yes, he broke me...bad!
It was worth it though, I had never played in the sand before. It's a lot different than the mud or rocks. Fun times!

I bought my 4runner from a guy in Michigan. He made a short video of his truck before I bought it. Heres a link:

Your Toyo hasn't LIVED until you let her play on the dunes... my ole gal climbed test hill numerous times with 227,000 miles on her...fully stick... with me driving! Who'd a thunk it? A girl in an old rusted out truck... Keeping your toyo off the sand is like making a kid miss Christmas. You simply gotta. It ain't right of you don't. I'll be there for a week in July with my gen 1 Dog Paddle. See you then?

We just watched it go by at head level going "holy crap!" I think his bounce was about as big as some of my jumps.
I may not come with alot of tools but I've always got the painkillers.
You should have a blast in the dunes. You'll be able to go all over the place aired down with a locker.
