Well, I have yet another minute problem.

It seemes that I have a brake system SNAFU.

I have checked my brake fluid level, its fine.
My master cyl. was replaced about a year ago.
The front pads are under 500K.
Don't know about the rear shoes.
All the lines are intsct as best as I know.

When I brake, there is almost no resistance till I get to about 1/2 depression, and then its a bit weak. Just a week ago, my breaks were great, real grabby.I haven't heard any wear indicators in the brakes, just a little squeeking, but not loud enogh for a wear indicator.

As best as I can figure, the system neds bled, but the system shouldn't have air in it unless there was a failure right? The only thing that may be defective would be the rubber lines, but they dont have any fluid on them. Please help before I rear end somebody. Thanks as always,

Yeah... sounds like air got in somehow.

I just had a local shop flush my brake system and I have the same symptom. Once I get time, I'll let them re-do it. argh.

Remember if your brakes go out, your e-brake is still very effective at bringing your vehicle to a stop. I'm not encouraging you to drive without brakes, just putting it in your head so it's there if you need it.

I had a broken metal line replaced about 2 months ago.

If it's the master I'm gonna be mad. The idiots at the Gemini service shop replaced it less than a year ago.

I myself am leaning twords the rubber lines, they look kinda old but my 4Runner has been undercoated so many times its hard to tell whats old stuff flaking off and whats old undercoating.

BTW- My e-brake don't do didily. It wil hold the 4x4 on level ground, but thats it. I can still drive fine, this just needs to be tended to, ya know? Besudes, I can always downshift, I love my 5-speed.

I had nearly the same problem just about a week ago. Turns out my rear wheel cylinders were leaking pressure. Fixed, emptied wallet, no more problems. They also flushed the brake fluid and filled it up with fresh Dot 4. Just need to go back to have them re-adjusted b/c it's not doing it by itself well enough.

I had the same problem after I replaced the metal line at the caliper. One push of the pedal and they were fine, then random like the pedal would go to the floor, and then fine again. SCARY!!

It sounds like they didn't get all of the air out. You can bleed them your self + a friend pumping and holding pressure. Start by tapping on the master cyclinder housing to get the any air out of it. Then bleed starting with the drivers rear wheel, passenger rear, pass front, drivers front, then the LSPV.
