Where's my Neutral Safety Switch?
Aloha,
I finally received my replacement NSS for the '92 4Runner with 3.0 and auto trans. Where is the bad NSS located, and how hard is it to replace. I refused to pay $362 for parts and labor and bought the replacement for $139. Now I'm ready to boost self esteem and save the labor.

check your hayes or chilton manual for location and installation instructions. some members on here have a fsm that they may be willing to send you a copy of that may be more detailed. fwiw, i dont know if the auto even has the nss. the manuals do, my old 86 22re had the little switch on the lower left of the dash.

I just replaced the NSS on my '88 4 Runner, Automatic, 3.0 cuz my backup lights were not working. The switch was located on the passnger side, bolted on to the side of the transmission. It wasn't too bad to replace, I didn't have to lift it or anything.
After replacement my back up lights worked for a brief time and are now not working again.
best of luck, you can do this.

Bumping up this old thread with a question about the Neutral start switch. This is on a 1987 4runner 22rte with auto. It does not start in neutral and back up lights don't work, and every now and then it will not start in park unless I kind of jiggle the shifter. I manually shifted NSS, it appears to have two positions. In one it starts fine in park and in the other it does not start in neutral or park, and no reverse lights at all. Is that NSS the only thing that controls starting and the back up lights or is there anything in the shifter itself that controls it too? I already have a new one on the way and when I was looking at what I would need to do to replace I couldn't see any obvious bolts or how it is held on. Any help?

Anyone? I'm 99% sure but just want to confirm that NSS is the only thing that controls park and neutral start and back up lights. No kind of sensor or contacts in the actual shifter itself right?
