I have a 94 toyota xtra cab, 4wd and it has the 2.4 liter 22re. I need to replace my fuel filter and I cant find the thing anywhere. I was told it was on the frame rail, or firewall, then my buddy said he traced the line to the tank. I want to change it as soon as possible. thanks

OK, I guess its right next to the oil filter from the pictures in that thread. Someone is using those nasty Fram filters with the cool grippy end that I copy with grip tape.

You can de-pressurize the line by disconnecting the plug on the fuel pump or removing a fuse on that circuit, I forget what its labled. Then start the motor. It will stall as it gets starved of fuel, the system is pretty much de-pressurized then.

On my roomate's Jeep there is a Schrader valve (just like on your tire valve stems) on the fuel rail to allow for easy de-pressurizing of the line. Maybe you have something similar. Just do it with the motor completely cool.

On my 2nd gen. '93' Toyota, the damn filter is along the frame on the passneger side. A REAL PITA!!! I had to drop the tranny support bracket to get it out and install it, and there is NOT much room for ratcheting, had to wrench it an 1/8 of an inch at a time!:mad:

Definately made a diff when all was installed, gained about 2 mpg back.

Damn Toyota egineers.

I think on the 4runners it is on the frame rail but on the trucks with 22re's I think it is on the engine. Im going to go ask toyota where it is to be positive. Thanks for all your help.

Did you have to de-pressurize the fuel system before replacing it? If not, was there tonnes of spillage? FSM says they don't need replacing but I'm hearing a lot of contrary opinions and would like to change mine; especially if it gets me better mileage.

on a '99 2.7 liter it's on the engine under the ehuast manifold. smoke and mirrors might help in changing it. I had a hell of a time and my friends laughed at me when I told them it took me about 4 hours to do the job. they hadn't seen where it was obviously.

No Skydigger I didn't have to depressureize the system. And not much spillage either, just have a tin can handy with some rags just in case. If you have the slotted box wrenches (metric of course) they will come in Real handy.

I was told the same about not having to replace the filter, but I checked around and the census was to go ahead and do it, it couldn't hurt. And it did get me 2 more mpg.
