Exclamation Where were Runners built in '99?? Are they really imports?

I'm having an good spirited argument with my boss about domestics and imports, he gave me a jab about my Runner being built in Tennessee. I had no rebuttal without knowing for sure what to say. I'm positive that most of their parts come from Japan, but is final construction in US?

I really want to stick i to him if I can.

All 4runners are made in Japan in the Tahara plant. I believe there might have been one other, but Tahara is the one I know of.

Your first letter in your VIN is "J". J = Japan

Tundra is Kentucky I think. Camry/Avalon/Highlander/Solara might be Kentucky, but not sure about that.

Who cares where a Toyota is made, they're still better build and quality than anything The Big Three make but they do incorporate alot of parts from Japan in 'em.

I got dogged at the strip by a last gen Camaro owner for supporting the Japanese since I drove an Eclipse and it was funny when I showed him mine was made in Normal,Ill while his was made in CANADA!!! Ok,the Camaro was still made in America Jr. but mine was built IN the U.S.A.

I think Mitsubishi's build quality is so-so whether it's built in Japan or here;great drivetrains, fit and finish tho' just isn't up to Toy's and Honda's but it's gotten a bit better recently.

I think Toyota and Honda of America put their workers up to higher standards than most car companies since their reps are on the line with the same cars made and sold in Japan.

There's a big reason why Japan keeps taking a bigger piece of the car sales pie here in the US.
If you said to Americans back in the '50s that 50% of America would be driving imported cars/trucks (especially Japanese) you would have been tried as a witch or worse...
