Where is the powerband on the 3.4?

Hey yotatechers, let me just start off by saying the 3.4 is the greatest V6 truck engine I ever drove. Hands down, this motor is much, much better than the its 15 year-old father, the 3.0. Ever since I first drove the 3.4, it was like a 3.0 on steroids, but its bone stock After perfoming a; minor tune-up, air-box-lid MOD, and adding a k&N filter, she really starts to "fly" and pull hard!

After these MOD's, the idle strted to pick up alittle bit (900 RPM), better than the previous (500 RPM) I geuss. Is this because of the added airflow from the intake? Plus, the engine seems to feel more "Peppy" at 2000 RPM. Where is the powerband on the 3.4? It seems to me like around 2500 RPM, am I right?

Thanks for the info,

I believe the torque peak is 3600 RPMs and mine moves pretty well at that RPM. The low end torque on the 3.4 is a lot better than the 3.0 but in my opinion the 3.0 pulls better on the top end. My 3.4 is pretty much done at just before 5000 RPMs.

Ironically I thought most people thought the 3.0 was a much torquier motor than the 3.4. I know the 3.4 has a lot more torque than the 3.0, but the 3.0 for what it is, is a relatively torquey motor in my opinion anyways. The 3.0 in my truck, which is bone stock, seems to choke out in the upper rpm band. What I personally attribute to, anyways, the fact that the exhaust manifold is a little restrictive and it backs up a bit maybe choking out the engine preventing it from really pulling hard in the higher rpm band because it can't exhaust, the exhaust, as fast as it could/should. Consequently I don't generally rev my truck past 4000, and rarely past 3200 say unless I'm on the highway or hammering the throttle to pass someone or something. It's mainly becuase I don't see any advantage to hammering it any harder than say 3200-3500 rpm's. The engine doesn't seem to pull any harder or move any faster. I think once I put an aftermarket exhaust on my truck will it really start to pull in the upper rpm band though from whom I know, what I've read and hear. I guess we'll see sometime in the Springtime.

There's a LOT of info around here about this, but in short... Given the mods that you've done so far, yes, the 3.4 will show it's best kick around 2500 rpm.

That will change based on a number of things...

If you change the exhaust components (one or more of adding headers, add a highflow cat, or a highflow muffler); change the size of the exhaust piping (up or down from the stock 2.25"); increasing air flow (like you found, but more radically like with a supercharger); adjusting the timing (requires a "piggy back" box); and a couple of other things.
