When a good MAF goes bad: how to test?
I used AutoZone's OBD II scanner to check the codes the other day and came up with P0171 Left Bank too Lean. I cleaned the MAF. Following is a description of what I did to clean the darn thing.
I took it out of the truck, sprayed the sucker down with enough electrical cleaner to create a little pool and sloshed the liquid back and forth to clean the sensor wire. I dumped out the solution, repeated the process and then reinstalled it in Sherpa. I already had the battery disconnected, so the codes had already cleared. The CEL came back on after I cleared it at AZ. Well, I happily drove around for a day or two until the CEL came back on. I am so damn tired of that light being on. Anyway, how do I test a MAF to determine if it really needs to be replaced?
Thanks.

If you are VERY careful, you can use a Q-tip soaked in the cleaner (also soak the part for a minute or 2 before) and gently wipe the surfaces with the Q-tip. I am afraid that if after doing this you still get a CEL, you will have to get a replacement....no need to test it because it is no good. Some have had luck cleaning and some have had to replace.....might be technique but I have a feeling some of it is just luck as well.
It may be difficult to reach the wires but they are at the end:
If you do need to replace you can go to a junkyard and get one off any 96-98 Tacoma or 4Runner
