Whats your cruisin speed?

hmm, guess i cant do polls. i just had a long drive and was amazed how hight those RPM's were gettin. i cruise around 75-80 here in mich on the freeways. gotta love the 70mph speedlimit and no points for anything under 10 on a highway. but i was at 3400 rpms. hmm 32's are lookin better already they will help drop those rpms. well how bout everyone else???

Yeah those rpms get up there. I usually keep it at 80mph when I'm on the open road which is about 3150 rpms in my runner.

I haven't up to that speed in a long time, but the last I remember I was at about 3K on the tach at around 80mph. I rarely take my rig on the highway though, the fastest I've gone lately is like 60mph but I have no idea what the RPM's are.

I've got 33" Mudders with stock gears at 4.88,

Fink

I am always 5MPH over the limit here. We have such varying speed limits in such a small radius that I cannot give you a solid number. Most freeways here are 65, which puts me at 70MPH and about 2800 with 265/75/16's and 4.30's with the 5 speed. On the 75MPH highways, I go about 80 and turn around 3100 RPM.

my cruising speed on the freeway is 55 on a good day. doesn't matter which tires, it's mainly my engine being long overdue for an overhaul.

i'm gonna start calling machine shops to see what their rate on tanking/boring cylinders are -- then it's 22R time

With my 35s and 5:29s I do 3500 in 4th and 3000 in 5th at 70 mph.

Carefull playing the tire/gear game the way you're suggesting. You don't want to fall out of the hp/torque peak area too much or you will lose that top speed entirely. For example when I ran 35s with 4.10s I could not get it to maintain more than 65 in 5th, even on level ground. The rpms weren't high, the power just wasn't available to push that much wind. I had to drive in 4th on the freeway, and the top speed in 4th was just maybe barely 75, period.

After the gear change which brought the rpms HIGHER, I have a higher top speed and a better cruising rpm (back to stock right where Toyota's engineers wanted it) and my mileage has improved. I had the same experiences with my 22re and 33s too. We don't have V8 grunt, we cannot run V8 rpms.

Flamed good point. Before I regeared I was only turning like 2300 at 70 but I could only do it on level ground with a tailwind. Any and I mean AnY kind of a slope I had to downshift. After putting in my 4.88's I turn 3000 at 70 but I can maintain it and even use my cruise now again because it doesn't kick off on every little hill for losing too much speed. I also get 30-40 more miles on a tank of gas now depending on how fast I'm driving. So I guess just because you are turning less RPM's doesn't mean better mileage because your engine is still working really hard.

Zactly. THe more hp and torque you have the less critical this becomes. My V8 F150 cruises the freeways at 1500 rpm with power to spare. My 4 cyl 4Runner wouldn't have been able to hold 70 at 1500 rpm, even at full throttle and full-pinging... and my 3.0 isn't much better.

'99 4Runner 265/75/16's and a 5speed, around 3200 @75

My old '91 Trooper was SCREAMING at 65, cranking out about 3600 rpms with 32's...... Although in order to get going that fast I had to endure a whole process that was somewhat akin to getting the Milinium Falcon into Light-Speed, complete with parts falling off/rattling into junk, etc, etc.

Now my even older '74 Diesel Land Rover that came before the Trooper was completely tapped out at 50 or 55 in 4th.......that made the Trooper seem like a Corvette.

i am figuring with 32's it wont be too significant of a jump. i gotta look up the final drive ratio in this 5spd and then i can do the math to figure out my cruisin rpms

this thing is a turd on the freeway already a lil slower wont hurt, but i'm sure 33's and bigger w/o a gear change is too much
