What's my engine?

All, I'm new to this forum, but after some fairly extensive surfing, you all seem to know a lot about Toyota's - go figure!!!

I'm wondering if someone can tell me which engine I have in the 1995 2WD Tacoma I just picked up. Everything I've read here would indicate that I have a 2.4L 22RE engine. But, some trouble shooting manuals I've been reading on Autozone.com are confusing me. Supposedly, the 22RE has a VAF sensor which would be between the air filter and the throttle body, but I don't see that on my truck. However, I do have an MAF sensor on the air filter housing which, again according to autozone.com, is supposedly on the 2RZ-FE engine. Does anybody know the difference between these two engines and how I can tell which one I have?

I've looked around the engine compartment and on the sticker by the driver side door and can't find anything. The manual in the glove box is for a 1997 tacoma, so that doesn't help either. Am I just being stupid :pat: I don't know why I can't find some sort of ID.

Didn't Toyota drop the 22RE with the release of the Taco? You should have the 2.7 found in today's Tacos...I think...

Look on the sticker under the hood and it should give you the engine code.

2RZ in 2wd Tacomas, 3RZ in 4wd Tacomas.

22RE was the pre Tacoma 4 cylinder.

You must have the 2RZ-FE

For a definate answer, the engine and post it.

Do yourself a favor, find a Toyota Factory Service Manual and use that for repairs. The Haynes, Chilton's, AutoZone manuals all suck since they are very general and confusing due to poor layout and lack of information.

Just my $0.02

Thanks for all the input. Based on pictures of engines I've found, I do believe I have the 2RZ. Any comments on this engine? Why did Toyota stop making the 22re?

Because it lacked power, and was no longer able to meet the ever increasing emissions standards.

your truck IS a tacoma, right? as in saying tacoma on the sides or tailgate somewhere? a lot of people get the hilux(pickup) and tacoma confused

it's too bad the R engine family was discontinued. it began in the early '50s and lasted until at least 1997(in some african countries). i wouldn't say it lacked power, it just couldn't keep up with how heavy the trucks it was used in were becoming over the years. never knew about the emissions thing, but what would i know, i have a straight pipe exhaust

the RZ family that began in '95.5 has proven to be just as good in every way as the R engines though.
