My AC is not running very cold .So a buddy bought me a recharging kit by Redtek with R12A .How hard is it to replace the old coolant .Is R12 as good as R134 ?What is the difficulty of this procedure ?

thats working backwards.... r12 is the old freon that is no longer made per federal spec and is sold only to licensed dealers now, once its gone, there is no more... r134a is the better refrigerant and is more environment friendly and readily available to the consumer... the generic r134a kits come with all you need and are pretty much all the same and work well....

Your 97 4Runner should have 134a in it. you don't need r12.

i had mine changed over with the help of a mechanic friend...all they did was flush out the r-12, replace schrader valve in the fill line and put r-134 in. longest time was the flushing out of the 12. i still have cool air from last year.

Yea, you should have R134A which works fine in your system. Some people dont like 134a because they say it's not as cold, but most of those people converted from R12 to 134a. The thing with 134A is that it's a different makeup and doesnt work the best in compressors that are made for R12. It's because 134A isnt as dense (i think is the word) as R12, so it's not as effective in a system made for R12.

But you shouldnt worry about that since you have R134A and can buy it over the shelf.

Sure. Google "r134a recharge kit"

And for the record - you can NOT replace your R134a with R12. Not unless you convert the system back, and there will no parts for that. Your compressor is designed to make higher pressures and your expansion valve is wrong for R12.

i agree. without switching out the compressor this will be an impossible feat.

You mean converted to R134a from R12. That's not what he said - he's talking about putting R12 in a 134a system. Won't work.

my bad...i thought that was clarified in the previous posts that it was a r-12 to 134. but nah...why r-12?! its obsolete....and 134 cools enough not unless you live in the desert!

I've been curious to try evironsafe 22, available from this website, in the accord.
No a/c in the yoter....yet.

http://befreetech.com/envirosafe.htm

According to the website, R134a contains hydro-fluorine gas that has been shown to produce instant testicular cancer on contact, particularly through your respiratory system

Uh oh. I better get checked right away then.
Been around a lot of that stuff for many years now, probably breathed a bit at least once...

Um... you did know they are trying to sell a product and usually when product A is being advertised, product B will be the bad guy always. For further information, ASE recommends only 134A since most other refrigerants are either combustible or harmful to the environment.

stick with r134a its what your truck was designed to run....r12 is like liquid gold these days since they no longer manufactor it. Within a few years R22 used it most house will be using R410a since its enviromentally safe (even though by federal law it still needs to be recovered which sucks)....even though R12 has far superior cooling characteristic then r134a, a system has to be designed to run it...its pretty easy to switch from a system that runs r12 to r134a its alot more complicated to switch from r134a to r12....
