ive got an 87 pickup, whenever i tell someone its a carb they are like, are you sure...they always say that they thought in 87 EFI came automatically...what ive heard is that made EFI an option in 87 and made it mandatory in 88...any ideas?

EFI has never been "mandatory." THere are still cars made with carburetors...
The last year for the 22R (carbed) Toyota was 87 though.

'87 in 4x4s, '90 in 2wds, at least in most civilized areas. you can buy a hilux with a 3RZ-F in some african and asian countries, reason being that you're more likely to be able to fix a carburetor in a remote area than try to get your engine to run with a fried computer.
EFI has never been mandatory, but it's easier to comply with emissions requirements and is more efficient if set up properly, since it's computer controlled. carbed motors in the '70s and '80s were a scary thing to behold, sometimes you're lucky if you can see the motor through the jungle of vacuum lines...unless you gut all that junk out like me...
