What are the signs of cam shaft or waterpump failure?

Pretty self explanitory. I'm having some engine troubles. If its the cam or H2O pump I will have to pay for it. My mechanic will cover the timing belt, I don't know what else it could be. Anything at all would be helpful. Thanks.

It might help is we knew what the engine troubles were. Just a thought...

I would think that the cam and water pump would cause two completely different symptoms so why are those your two choices?

well when my water pump "went out" it just started to leak. if its just overheating try the thermostat. mine started overheating on wednesday, the water pump had already been replaced, so i replaced the thermostat myself yesturday. $21 at toyota for the part with the gasket. funny thing is that i had a small leak coming from where the thermostat was, little did i know that where the thermostat was until i went to replace it.

Yeah, if its the water pump it will leak from the "weep hole." The hole is there on purpose.

A cam wearing out? Do you mean the cam seals? If a cam wore out, the engine would run like crap because the valves would open and close at the wrong time.

Please expand on the cam question...

Weel, all of a sudden I started experiancind hesitation and stumbling in the 300-4500 RPM range in all gears. I also heard a dull metalic sound, like a muffler dragging but coming from inside the engine. I took it straigh to my mechanic and he lookes at it outside the shop for a minute. Basicly he said that there was something wrong but he didnt know if it was the timing belt. water pump, idler, or maybe even the cam shaft because he was just looking at it.

The idler and timing belt were replaced by him less than 5000 miles ago so if either of those are the prob he will cover all the cost plus parts. If not, I'm broke.

My Haynes book lists my exact symptoms as a failure with the timing belt, but I was just trying to rule out the other things.

I drove less than 1 mile with the probems.

Any help/ideas guys, thanks!
