What should i do and what should the mech do on my 200 4runner?

Ok, i know to search and i have done just that. But I have a few questions that I have not been able to find the answer I need to them.

I just picked up my new to me 2000 4Runner limited 4x4 with the 3.4 V6 with 120K miles on it. Now I am going to do a full tune up to make sure that everything is in tip, top shape. I will also be using it to towing a trailer in a few months about 500 miles each way so I want to make sure I won?t have any problems.

OK, first off is all the TLC to get it into the best shape of it?s life, then the sky is the limit on modding! Obviously I need to do a few things with that many miles. So here is my list so far-

Things I am not sure if I should do:
Timing belt/water pump/seals/tensioner and anything else I should do while I am in there
Transmission service

Things I know I can do:
Plugs
Air filter (and the deck plate later?)
Radiator hoses and drain ect?
Oil change
Plug wires
Battery (the one in it needs to be replaced)
Front and rear diffs
Transfer case
Fule filter
Fule Injectors (clean)
Thermostat

Ok so now for what I need to know, Which one of the first section would be doable for a guy that is about a 7-8 out of 10 on the mechanic ability scale. The biggest one is (obviously the timing belt) To have a mechanic do it will run me $400 in labor + parts. Is that worth it? Doing it is not the real problem, it is the chance of messing something up that has me worried.

Also anything else that I should do during this stage? After this I will get into all the modding of the truck but I want everything in the best condition possible first. Thanks!

Front a rear diffs
Transfer case
are easier than changing the oil. You could also replace the filter screen in your transmission and pan gasket but it wouldnt change all the fluid inside the transmission.

Depends on your skill with mechanics and if you have the right tools. I would do it now because iv learned alot in the past year but when i first got my 4runner i had my friend do it. So its really up to you and your skills. but iam sure if you did it yourself youd get alot of help from everyone here on yotatech.

You could also get a new fuel filter. Takes about 15 mins to change.

If it still has the original timing belt I would definately do it. A tranny flush is also cheap insurance with towing a trailer. As said before change the differential and transfer case fluids, I just changed them on a 99 tacoma, the rear end fluid came out silver with lots of metal chunks on the drain magnet with 65000 on the odometer.

watch for specials for the TB...

Sometimes the dealer specials are priced right... Just don't let them charge full hours for the water pump if they are in there already for the timing belt.

If towing will be a regular event add a transmission cooler...cheap insurance. Stacked plate like a hayden, not fin on coil.

Not a bad deal for the timing belt at all! I will have to look into that.

So anything else anyone can think of that i should lube, grease, change, clean, replace, check ect…

As soon as I get these taken care of I can start modding!!
