Question What should I do about my tires?

I've got three decent BFG Mud Terrains and one that's pretty messed up. I had front end problems for quite a while and the front passenger tire wore in a very irregular pattern. It's gotten to the point where it is extremely noisy. I rotated my tires to see if the noise would move with the tire. It did.

So, I know I need to replace that tire. I'd rather not buy a whole new set if I don't have to, since they've still got some life left in them, but I'm thinking I'll need to buy at least a pair. What should I do?

If I buy a single tire, would the difference in tread height cause a problem? If I buy two tires and keep the good tire as a spare, would the difference in tread height between the front and rear tires cause a problem?

Also, any recommendations on where to buy? I'm a Progressive customer, so I want to get the best price...

Cruise a couple of tire shops that sell used tires. Around here every other truck has BFG's on it so you run a good chance of finding the same tire with very similar amount of tread to what you have.

I had always heard you should replace tires in pairs and mount them in the front since the front causes more wear. Discount tire refuses to mount your new tires in the front claiming it will adversely affect handling - and your old tires that are in the front will wear that much faster!

I had a tread separation this summer and replaced 2 of my BFG Long Trails with BFG AT's. I always replace my tires in pairs and have them mounted on the rear, then rotate them to the front when I replace the other pair. I haven't noticed any faster wearing of the front tires...ever.

Even though I had only one tire that lost it's tread, Sam's adjusted both tires because I told them to. If you put 1 new tire on, then it will be a larger diameter than the other 3 and could affect handling. And I would think that an full-time 4wd would require that you replace them in sets of 4.

Tire Rack has 31x10.5/15 BFG MTs for $123 plus shipping. Good deal?

I also put in a bid for a single BFG MT on eBay. It's going for $31 right now. Still two days to go though and reserve hasn't been met. It says it's new, though.

I haven't had a chance to call around town to see if anyone I can find a used one. Maybe I'll get to that tomorrow.
