What is the purpose of this?

Hello everyone, first time poster.

'97 4Runner 4X4 SR5

Ignoring the fact that this is one of the worst DIY attempts I have ever seen, what would be the reason for this? There are what appears to 2" coil spring spacers installed, so my first thought was they were attempting to extend the end links because of the lift (not that they are of any use in this state though). Any other reason this may have been done?

If thats your sway bar, it could be a disconnect for it to allow for more articulation. That being said, i dont know what part thats on so i could be wrong. Is it on both sides?

It is the sway bar. Same on both sides. If it was a disconnect, why have it extended 2.5 inches above the factory end link? Seems to me the sway bar is basically pointless after that "mod".

Well I thought I was the only person that was that home grown on here. Tire bushings are a classic. That being said will it in screw up top? It looks like the thread has been welded below the sway bar

It looks like when they lifted it they thought that the swaybar links needed to be extended. The swaybar will still work, but the lack of bushings and theall-thread link is probably going to snap sometime. I would get a set of disconnects.

Maybe to compensate for a bracket lift? Looks like those 'extensions' would snap of quite easily though.

Wow, now that is some jimmy rigging. I don't why they went through all the trouble, I just removed my sway bar when my end links went bad on my 3rd gen, hardly even know its missing.

By the way your inner axle boot is leaking.

Jeez, that almost scares me as to what else could be "tweakerfied" on your 4runner. I'd check everything in the engine compartment and do a full sweep of everything on the undercarriage after seeing that.

Haha, some good responses guys. I have seen my fair share of redneck engineering, but generally those fixes at least somewhat accomplished the desired result. This not only looks terrible, but would be worthless if I really needed the sway bar. Granted, if I were in a situation where I really needed it, some other awesome engineering marvel that I haven't found yet would probably give out and send me rolling into a ditch.

Commonly known as booty fab.
Remove and replace.

I sell endlinks and discos for lifted 3rd gens so you can do what they attempted to do correctly.
