This is for a 2000 3.4 AT w/ 100k on the clock. And, what type of milage are you guys getting in the city/hwy? (if there is a thread I'd love the link).

I'm getting b/t 13-15mpg city (which I think sux b/c I drive like a grandma!) and about 18-19 hwy. Tires are inflated, no roof racks and had a full tune up just done so things are as good as it can get. I'm thinking I should be getting at least 3-4mpg more all the way around.

how's the fuel filter, are the injectors cleaned and how new are the o2 sensors

all was done when i had the new timing chain installed. all new fluids, etc. as well.

mobil one oil

toyota spec grease and diff and tranny oils

87 octane gas, 85 at high altitude and if your knock sensor works

40 psi all around, stock spec tires

so everyone is using the cheaper lower octane gas??? i've been using the highest most expansive octane.... could this be why my mpg is so bad?? these motors like the lower octane?

should i be using dyno oil? synth bland or switch to full synthetic? if switching to full synthetic, whats the procedure? i know it likes to find leaks.... and whats the milage b/t changes?? i normally switch dyno oil either every 3k or 3 months.

Yeah, 87 is all that is required. All you are doing is dropping a few more bucks a tank out of your wallet. I don't think it affects your mileage much.

Fact is that unless you live right next to a freeway (literally) and have zero in town commuting, 15-16 MPG is about your average.

I use synthetic blends with great results. I change the oil ever 5K with a new filter (no Fram). Ford makes a good Synthetic Blend that I have used and trust. I just ran 5K on Mobil Clean 5000. Seems fine. I think frequency of oil changes need to be at least 5K unless you are running a Full Synthetic which would necesitate a filter change every 5K anyway and a top off. You could strech Mobil 1 to 15,000 a change that way.

Do us a favor and do some research. Check that sweet little link labeled Search on the top of the page. Dino vs synthetic and how to do it has been talked about a bazillion times or more on here. Sounds like you need to just sell your runner and get a Prius if your that concerned over 2-3 mpg.

lol....wow thanks mr. grt advice there. i'm not THAT concerned but at least want to be in the ball park of where this year/model/engine should be.

i know oil debates rage on every forum and i'm not one to beat a dead horse (and, imagine this... i am also familiar with the search button) but i also know every manufacturer, ie: motor type, displacement, etc is different....

so with that said, a link to said oil debate would be appreciated. and also...

do you know any good used prius for sale? i'm looking for a black one, i'd like custom rims but can you tell me how much mpg's i'd lose if i went to a 17" rim on it?

ps, i thought lower octane gas = worse milage and gums up injectors faster? and 15k b/t oil changes? i would be so scared! i'm old skool, 3k or 3month guy.

Step 1: Call the pharmacy and get your Ritalin rx refilled.
Step 2: Please search before people stop liking you. This stuff has been covered (recently) ad nauseum.
Step 3: Google "prius forums". Honestly, what are the odds someone here knows the adverse affects 17" rims have on a Prius' fuel economy? Pretty slim.

15. Searching (or a blatant lack of)


While you won't find a nicer, more helpful bunch than the Yotatech membership, anyone can grow frustrated seeing new threads with the same questions over and over. A few well spent minutes educating yourself so you ask INTELLIGENT and INFORMED questions will gather much more attention from the seasoned members in the know than a lazy attempt to have the members spoon feed you information. It is ALWAYS better to add on to an existing thread (if the information is pertinent) than to start another with the same information. This makes it easier for the next person with fewer threads to pour over to gather their information.

gum might have been true ages ago, but

lower octane = increased energy per unit measure = increased mpg
87 octane is fine

no it doesn't gum up injectors. but if you worry throw some cleaner
in it every 10th tank
