what the hell is that sound???

hi all, its been a ages since i posted here but i need some help, theres this wierd screeeching sound in my 3.0 at cold start ups...i have been irritated by sound since forever, and cant find any info on it. really wierd, i cant point it out...

heres two short video clip to how the thing sounds..

http://slowsti808.tripod.com/wtfsound.MPG

in the clip the truck is already getting warmed up, so its not actually at its loudest. when the truck is really warm the sound is completely gone....

if anybody knows what it its, could u tell me if i could fix it myself, costs, or if its a big job...

Sounds like you may have a main bearing failing. Hard to tell from that video, but thean, all I have is is a laptop with leeeettle bitty speakers.

You didn't mention if and when it goes away. And when it does, is it gradual or abrupt? What about ambient temperature? I'd agree on a bearing, but it could be a number of things

^^ sorry dunno what the sound codec is, but thanks for trying

the sound is only in cold morinings and gradually goes away when the engine is at normal running temp. rpm change (reving...) doesnt seem to affect the sound much, maybe a little, but i think its just the engine drowning out the screeeching.

thanks for all ur replies guys, now i have somewhat of an idea....

The belts being new does not mean they wont make noise. Try a little belt dressing. Another thing that will make a screeching noise as you are describing is the water pump going bad. Try some good water pump lube that you just dump in the radiator. If the noise quits or gets better you'll know what it is. Mike

Me bad.

I concur with not ruling out the belts 'cause they're new. I had that on my '90. The belts screeched due to misaligned pulleys. The belt dressing will help determine that. I'd also eliminate each accessory 1-by-1 by removing belts or some other means. What weight oil have you been using?

oh thank u! a much cheaper thing to try first haha. well im sure the belts are good tho, i changed them myself. i changed them cuz they were making noise and was all cracked n stuff. i have 65k on the truck, is that enough for the possibility of the main bearing failing? i think the weight of the oil is either 10w30 or 5w30, not sure, my mom always took it in to be done. i told her that ill start doing it..... its actually her truck

funny tho, it doesnt always do it. this morning i started it up, cold weather and all... the truck sounded like a normal champ....

Never seen a main bearing go with that low milage on one but anything is possiable. Check that water pump to. It just might save you a bundle of money. Sure hope it's not a main.Mike

I don't really hear any screeching in those clips, but I do hear something, kinda, that sounds odd. Check the idler pulleys. They have bearings in them, and if bad will eventually sieze. First, check visually to be sure they turn at startup. Then spray each one with a shot of WD40 and see if it quiets. Actually, try this with each belt itself too. Alternator (bearings or brushes) and water pump seem likely too.

ooo thanks more ideas is good haha, wel thats what i did to determine that the belts were squeeking, so i changed them out, i guess it doesnt hurt to try again when the sound comes back. didnit do it today but when it happens its in the cold morinings. maybe ill post a vid of it running normally without the sound that way u can compare the two and see if u can hear the difference.

ok, in this vid it obviously sounds much different, but when i go closer to the engine bay, i think i hear a little a bit of it, more of a faint humm. well im off to go try the things u guys suggested, thanks again!

oh yea, sounds like squeeking in the vid but its actually the normal clicking the 3.0 usually makes.

Howzit

My buddies 4Runner had that same noise coming from under my timing belt cover when his water pump was going out, there was no fluid leaking, but it made that same sound. When it was cold it kinda squeaked a bit, but once it heated up the noise went away. He got a water pump, idler pulley and timing belt, replaced it all and no more noise. Oh yeah, what ya mean by cold mornings, in Oahu, ha ...? LOL
