What gear?
Hey I was just wondering what gear you guys are in going up steep to semi steep hills with the 22re? Also I set my timing with what it said on the hood which is 5, what are you guys running it at? And what is to advanced?
Thanks,
Mario

When I had 30" tires on really steep hills i had to take them in 3rd gear floored to maintain like 45ish. I usually shifted around 2k with my 4.10 gearing. Now that I have my 32x11.50s I let it get to about 3k before shifting and still get up to speed. My timing is set to 5 when the box is shorted, just like the manual says.

When the motor pings
I know on some vehicles, the crankshaft pulley is a two piece affair sandwiched between rubber and over time the pieces slip and the timing mark is no longer accurate. This is probably one of the reasons why my auto shop teacher never belived in the factory specs when it came to timing. We used to take his 75 dodge van, find the steepest grade, and floor it while I played with the distributor until it just barley pinged and backed it off slightly. It was fun, but scary at times, he was kinda crazy.
Don't be afraid to play around with it. Try adjusting it to 7BTDC and see how is works out. Just don't let the pinging carry on too long, it's a good way to puch a hole through the pistions.
