What exhaust to get?

Hey guys, i'm a noob,

just wondering if anyone knows. are there any bolt on cat-back exhaust systems out there for the 2001 4runner? I know there is the TRD one, but its so darn expensive.

Get the one that, combined with an SC, will give you around 300hp.

borla makes trd's catbacks and might be cheaper. the gibson is pretty cheap, but the jardine is even cheaper, i think. welcome to yotatech.

Cheap is in the eye of the beholder. Remember, if its cheap, its probably cheap. Go with the Borla, it is money well spent.

Now that i've read up some more on this, i'm leaning towards getting a Borla now...cept when I went to Borla's website it says they dont exist for the years between 00-02...does that mean i'm screwed?

You're not screwed...

Do you live in the rust belt? If so, then you probably want Stainless Steel. Even if Borla, doesn't have a bolt on cat-back system, you could always order a Borla muffler from some palce like summitracing.com and then have a local muffler shop weld you up a stainless system to go with the muffler of your choice. Just be prepared to pay double for SS...

My Borla is all stainless steel, and comes with a 1M mile warranty or until your Toyota dies. The Borla literature claims it is easy enough to bolt on in your garage in about 60 minutes with minimum effort. I don't agree with the minimum effort claim, anytime you are laying on your back working under your rig is not minimum, it is a PITA, literally!

I had done lots of searching, as I am new and already learned not to ask a question before doing a search. My thing is I was really lucky to buy a 97 Runner off my old man for way cheap. He had already supercharged it as per my recommendation. I was never happy with the exhaust he did and I really want a system that DOES work with the SC. Because there is so much info here on exhausts, could someone help me out and gimme an idea about what has worked in the past with a SC. I want the whole range, cheap, expensive, stainless, whatever. I just want to know my options. Thanks

Has anyone dyno tested different exhausts? Also on truckperformance they have a 3.slow exhaust from a company called jba that makes some pretty big claims. Anyone know anything about jba or how accurate any of the claims on truckperformance are?

Buy a Borla Muffler and get a local exhaust shop to build the rest. Sure you wont have mandrel bent pipes, but you will have the same sound and walk away with $400 more than if you purchased the kit. Plus, you can do a duel-exhaust this way if your willing to remove the spare.

I'll second having a local shop bend up the pipe and getting a muffler you like. I like the sound of Dynomax Super Turbos, nice a deep rumbly stuff. While they won't last as long as a Borla, and you won't be able to say, "Dude, I got a Borla, I can hand it down to my great grand kids", it's much less expensive. Dynomax makes a stainless muffler for more moola as well.

If you find a shop that does mandrel bends, you're lucky. The cure for crimp bends is going with a size up pipe, like 2.5" instead of 2.25. I'd also recommend going with a 3" muffler, as this is the biggest restriction next to the cat. This will help more than you realize.

However, you cant go too large with the pipe or the exhaust. Larger size = faster cooling = loss of scrambling effect in exhaust. Cool exhaust leaves slower.
