What do you think of the 4 cyl. models?
Saw a listing here today in NYC, of a 1998 Black 4 cylinder 4x4 4Runner w/ 66k miles for $10.9k
I checked resale prices and saw that a comparable 4Runner with 6 cylinders goes for almost 4k more!!!
Is the difference that great? If you're basically doing highway mileage? Please let me know your thoughts.
Thanks, RL

The 4 cylinder engine rocks but might be a bit underpowered esp if you like to take 5 people w/ gear up to the mountains.
I'd say keep your search up to find a 6 cylinder.

A 4 cyl with the right diff gears will have no problem keeping up with a V6 up hill, loaded, whatever. When people get bigger tires but don't re-gear they have a hard time on the long highway climbs.
4 cyls come with timing chains, not belts. There is plenty of room for stuff like an air compressor, on-board hot water, and room to reach in and do maintainence.

I had a 96 Taco w/ the 2.7L 4cyl. GREAT engine. If the 4Runner has a stick, I'd go for it. (but thats just me...) The upsides are. cheaper header & exhaust. They DO make a supercharger for it. I dont know about fuel economy. The 4 Runner is alot heavier than a Taco, but I used to average 24 mpg hwy w/ my Truck w/ a stick.

When I was looking for a 5spd 4Runner I came across a 2000 4cyl 4x4 here in PHX. I can tell you right now that I would not be happy with a 4cyl. I agree, its a great engine. But, my driving habits are, well, fast. I like to keep up with faster traffic in the left lane, and I like to fly up 75MPH hills on I-17. I garantee that a stock, loaded 4cyl 4Runner would disappoint me. Its the TQ that I am concerned with. The 2.7 has 177ft.lbs of TQ (I think), which is 48 less than the V6.
I truly believe it comes down to driving habits. If you like to just keep up with other traffic, and dont care about passing a big rig at 70MPH in a headwind with a roof rack full of camping gear and 4 people, then by all means get the 4cyl.
For my needs, I went with the V6.
