What can happen if I drive back home with a leaking t-case?

I came down to Florida 8 days ago, and I noticed when I arrived, I had fluid on the transfer case. I cleaned it up and drove it, but could not pinpoint the leak.

Everything was greased up before I left underneath and the whole steering rack. I was thinking maybe it can be some grease that melted, but I doubt it.

Questions... Is it safe to drive back to NJ since it doesn't actually drip (cardboard under there) and how and what do I fill it up with? Tranny fluid seems to be staying in the same place on the dipstick.

I am kinda caught in a dilemma with this storm about to hit Florida, and if I should just take the Amtrak Auto Train to Virginia, and drive the rest, of if I should be ok.

open the fill hole and stick your little finger in, if you cant touch the oil top it off and go. If its just a slow leak theres more than enough oil to get you home, even on a 15 hour drive or so.

edit: its on your 02? dunno how the t-case oil level is gauged on those but on my truck you fill it till oil spills over the edge of the fill hole. ohh, and if you mess with it remember gear oil and engine oil are NOT the same thing.

hope you get it taken care of

to give you an idea where the fill plug might be, in this picture the socket for the fill plug goes through the only hole in this transmission mount on the back of the t-case that doesnt have a bunch of t-case already sticking through it.

its on an older tcase but maybe they havent changed it much on the new styles

if its a slow drip, u should be fine. trans fluid and t-case fluid are seperate so if ur t-case was leaking it wouldnt effect ur trans level. sounds like u have a leak at your t-case input shaft seal that links the trans output ant the t-case. its a pretty easy fix. it takes me a couple hours. just drop the crossmember and un-bolt the t-case from the tranny. easy as that!

if its a slow drip youll be fine as long as your not using ur 4wd and putting extra motion in the case to push more oil out

i had a leaky tcase seal for a two weeks (about 4-500 miles or so) and no problems

Thanks for the help. I can't do anything about it now.

I broke my tibia and the other little bone next to it last night /this morning.
Percocet is not helping one bit, just making me vomit.

What else is next. :sigh:

It was a great week actually. The drive down took 16 hours, and I drove all but 100 or so miles. I got there and was a little worried if the truck would make it back, then I stopped caring after I tighten the bolts up.

What was supposed to be my last night of the stress free southern life/party, I broke/fractured the leg near the ankle in 2 spots.

The drive home was semi brutal.

Good news, I have one more payment on the truck and I am done.
I seemed to average 17 MPG @ ~80 MPH.
Kept it full of the Chevron w/ techron while I had the chance.
