well, i broke a cv axle
yep, i sure did break a cv axle.
i was offroading, climbing a fairly steep incline when it happened. the dirt got pretty lose and there was a lot of wheel spin on all 4 corners, i was in 4lo center locked btw. so i aired down thinking that would help, but not really. i made it up 3/4 of the way and thought i could make it, but no. i let up on the gas to back up and try a better line, but right then i head a loud bang, like a klunk. i looked underneath and sure did see cv grease flowing. wheelspin, it's a bad thing.
i went right to my local toyota shop, and they took a look at it. i trust them, they're pretty cool to me. anyway, here's what i need"
- cv axle
- axle seal
- axle bearing
- front differential carrier
sure would be nice if i only needed the axle, but noooo. it snapped pretty bad. they took out part of the axle so it'd be safe to drive around, and not have it flopping around.
so where do you guys recommend i get these parts? i was thinking i could get the cv axle from CVJ, but am open to anything.

part of it is definitely the tires, esp the MTRs. i think what caused it was that wheel was spinning, then all of a sudden it got traction (thanks to the MTRs being so grippy on rocks). so when that happens just the right way, so long cv.

Wow, that sucks. That's the first one I've heard of break at the diff. I thought they usually break at the hub side.
What's damaged in the carrier? That will be a pretty major repair bill if you have to replace all of the carrier along with the axle. You might want to consider getting a used carrier to save some $$$$.

yeah. the carrier is cracked in two places. they gave me a quick quote on a toyota carrier, and it was $291.
i feel kinda stupid about all this. i should have known better than to attept it, esp with such bad traction. but then again i am a stubborn ass and thought i could do it if was careful about it. oh well, you live you learn.

Wonder if this is going to be a problem on the 4th Gens with the traction control??
Strong V8 pumping, larger tires, locked center diff and the traction control braking the spinning tire and all the torque goes to the tire with traction

That sucks man. Hmm, I've always wondered, if you break a CV with ADD is it bad for the diff. if you drive on it? Since only one axle shaft is being turned...

Fast spinning wheels plus sudden traction equals broken stuff. Tires have less influence than the violent spinning.
Slow going into a wedge with traction is how I toasted my first joint.
Lockers and crawlers help in the slow going and controlling wheel spin, but that sure is a good break. If you toasted the front diff, you are in for some big bucks.

It look like you just broke the inboard joint. You can get one of these from the junk yards, they generally are pretty tough.
the case though.....man, that's gonna cost ya, no matter where you go.
The seal, you can pull and knock in your self. If you feel like taking this on yourself, I have a '99 FSM that I can post pictures of what you need, to include torque specifications......

Broke doesn't do that justice... 
Mauled, snapped, obliterated would be a better choice of words for that twisted piece of metal. Man there must have been some serious torque (moment-arm) going down on that thing for it to explode like that...

This is a sobering post for a guy who is going to hook up the stuff for his ARB RD-90 this weekend.
