Weird Electrical Problem

I recently put new foglights and wiring. I just wired it up simply from the positive battery terminal with an inline fuse and grounded. The switch isn't tied into the ignition anywhere, I need to remember to do that later so I don't accidentally leave them on and drain the battery. The other day on the highway headed out of town, AInoticed if I have the foglights on, it makes the fuel gauge read about an 1/8th less. IF I turn them off, the gauge goes back up. WTF?

It can't be a voltage drop. I turned on the fogs with the headlights on and nothing dims. The gauge just slowly drops. Maybe I need to try a better ground/different ground.

you have diagnosed it already yes. I am presuming/assuming your ground for the switch or the lights themselves is sharing that ground with the fuel gauge.

Let us know please... wiring is two wires so if not the hot then it generally is the ground. Easy for me to say, let us see if that is so.

Did you ground your switch under the dash near the fuse kick panel -I am guessing?

Something to consider when you start adding lights and other electrical accessories is to do the Auxillary Fuse panel. GR8 easy mod to do that will save you lots of time and trying to find connections for power. No need to worry about ignition hook up either. As for leaving your lights or other accessory on, you can also do indicator LED like I did on my driving and fog lights. There are two flat mount LED in my dash/gauge cluster to remind me that they are on. Also using the Aux fuse panel will eliminate potential voltage drop across other circuits that you had to tie into before like you are having now. Good luck! If you need any help with any of the recommended mods you can do a search on my installs and get pictures and directions that I used to install mine. Or you can pm me with any other questions
